Charles Clancey, equally as well known in Portland as in the state of Washington, arrived in Port land yesterday. Mr. Clancey has a contract with the Government to furnish Uncle Sam's cavalry ser- vice with several hundred horses. Mr. Clancey. after scouring the State of Washington for horses that are up to the Government's requirements, has decided that Oregon-bred horses are the ones he wants. While Mr. C.'ancey's con tract does not call for 2000 horses, he will buy that many in the state. He has been in correspondence with a number of horse-raisers and they will have their herds ready when be visits their ranches. If a woman isn't quite sure of her husband she always advertises for a plain cook instead of a pretty one. Car Load of Emigrants Will Leave Michigan March I For Monmouth F. W. Cook an Old and Veil known Resident of Monmouth Passes away. MONMOUTH For several years families from Michigan have been locating here Wonderlul stories from the pens of these seekers of homes have reached the inhabitants of the ice bound home of their childhood. The re sult is that a car load of home seek ers will leave Michigan March 1, coming direct to Monmouth id search of homes in the Blue Ribbon County. The tide of emigration is com ing our way and Oregon is on the eve of such development as even the most optimistic haye never dreamed. F. II. Cook died at his home at theri place Saturday February 18, 1905. Mr. Cook was born in Kentucky for the little fellows, fur they wern completely tired out, and the game ended with a score of 16 to 11 in favor of Dallas. Good team work was done on both teams and some of the players will shine as stars on the college teams before ma ny years. Good feeling and clean playing were features of the game that are worthy of emulation by the older tam. LEBANON DENTIST CRUSHED TO DEATH. Dr. George Cheadle, a well known dentist and prominent citizen of Lebanon, was crashed to death by a falling building near that city last Friday. Dr. Cheadle bad closed his of fice for the day and went out to his farm to oversee some work bsing done there. A dairy house was being moved and the Dr. was assisting. He had crawled under the house for some purpose, when one of the sills broke, letting the building fall, causing his death in stantaneously. The body was crushed out of all semblance to a human form. The building was raised as Boon as possible but the body was entirely lifeless. tWm m ' limm -tm Murray Wade takes a fall out of the Polk county delegation in the late lamented and unlamented legislature and here is the result. At midnight an elaborate lunch was served at the Cottage hotel setting a high standard for the new lodge as entertainers. The State officers present who supervised the installation were Grand Chancellor L. M. Curl and Grand Keeper of Records and Seal R. StinBon. The ceremonies consumed the entire night and the chickens were crowing when the ndependence delegation returned by special motor this morning. Those present from the Falls EXCURSION TO NEWPORT Special Train Take Senators, Repre sentatives, Wives and Clerks To Newport A special train of Senators, Rep resentatives, wiyes and clerks paid Newport by the sea a hurried ex cursion trip Saturday, returning Sunday. Whether this was Bpecial junketing or what not we do not presume to know Toledo Keporter. Adopted by the legislative mem bers of the excursion party: "Whereas, The members of the legislature of the state of Oregon, and their families, and friends are desirous of expressing their grati tude to the Southern Pacifio Com- pany, the Uorvaius k eastern nan wav Company, the faculty and ladies of the Oregon Agricultural College and the citizens of Newport for their courtesies and hospitality extended them on their trip to Newport on Saturday, February 11th, 1905, therefore be it "Resolved. That the members and families and friends of the 6aid legislature of the state of Oregon do hereby extend to said Southern Pacifio Railway Company, the Cor vallis & Eastern Railway Com pany, the faculty and ladies of the Oregon Agricultural College, and the citizens of Newport, a vote of thanks for their kindness and the courtesy shown." "Riches takes wings." "And wings take riches, if they are on a bonnet." HouBton Post. in 1832. Coming to Oregon in 1881 he engaged in the Mercantile business at McCoy with Charley Graves. In 1892 he sold his in terest in the business at McCoy and moved to this place where he nas since resided. The funeral services were held Sunday at the Baptist church of which church he was a member. Rev. Osborn of Independence preached the ser mon. Interment was held in the cemetery west of Monmouth. J. H. McEldowney and wife of Portland are visiting at the Mc Eldowney iarm south of town. Robert Savage, the crack clari netist of Salem, spent Monday afternoon here. Mrs. Frank Lucas spent Sun day in Portland. W. E. Bridwell is visiting in Portland. Rev. G. K. Berry, of Portland, delivered a highly interesting seri es of lectures at the Christian church last week. Large audi ences greeted the speaker each night. A basket ball team from Dallas college played a team from the training department Saturday night. The Dallas team was much older and heavier but the "kids" had them on the go 'till near the close of the first half, the score at that time being 8 to 2 in thsir favor, age and muscle be gan to tell however, and the first half closed with an 8-8 score. Sharman Saturdsiy night for the purpose of discusstag the matter of allowing houses of iltI fame in the town. It was the eehb& of the meeting that houses of thlat class should be required to movffr on. A committee was accordingly appointed by Mayor Messner to wait upon Landlady Clark. F. A. Patterson, Prof T. J. New bill and John Burton were named. The committee called on the woman whose residence here met their disapproval, and they were told Bhe would comply with their request to quit the town. The owner of the property was also warned against renting his prop erty tor such purposes. COUNTY JUDGE DID NOT APPEAR A number of citizens of the Luckiamute road district met at Airlie Saturday for the purpose of holding a Good Roads convention. Judge Coad it was understood was to be present and there was quite a turn-out of people interested iri road building. The Judge how ever did not show up and those present were not backward about criticising him for failing to help them out. No formal meeting was held. I
