Dickinson has added to his livery a fine new single driving horse. Mr. and Mrs. Emmitt StaaU of l.ewisville were in Independence Saturday. G. L. Hawkins, ex-member of the Oregon legislature was in town Saturday. The Charter Oak Mill on ths Lewie Helmick place commenced operations Monday. C. E. McLane of was in Indepen dence Friday. He will Boon move his lamily to Grants Pass. Mrs. S. S. Nance of Portland vis ited her nieces, Rowena and Lenona Sperling, over Sunday. Miss Florence Burton is attend ing the commencement exercises at Mt Angel this week. Mr. and Mrs. S. B. Baldwin, left for Pendleton Friday, where they will make an extended visit. Will D. J. W, Kirkland. Miss Nellie Pomeroy, who has apent the winter teaching at Wen atchee, Wash., returned home Friday. Mrs. Frank Lilly, of La Grande, formerly of this city, passed through Saturday on her way to Corvallis. v Frank O'Neill district passenger agent for the Northern Pacific was in Independence and Monmouth the first of the week. Mrs. Thomas Fennell pleasantly entertained a number of her young lady friends Saturday afternoon at her home. Games ana music was the order until 5 o'clock when etrawberrries and cream with cake was seryed to the guests. John P. Goodwin, grand sire of t.A Tndenendent Order of Odd Fel- r , , lows was in Portland last week and was a guest of the local lodges. Saturday evening, a reception was given Mr. Goodwin at Anon Hall, to which the Odd Fellows and Re bekahs of Independence received invitations. M. Krebs of Salem, South Da kota, has been visiting at the borne of John Dickinson. Mr. Krebs and Mr. Dickinson lived neighbors to each other in South Dakota for a number of years. Mr. Krebs is on his way to California and will prob ably return to Oregon after seeing the sights in the former state. The coaches were not overly crowded en the excursion train to Falls City Sunday, but just com lortably filled. A ball team com Doeed ot Dallas and Rickreall boys, was taken on at Dallas. During the afternoon a game was played kt w Ann this team and the Falls City nine, resulting in a score of 7 t 2 in fayor of the latter team. The ball ground at Falls City is icely improved. The fand etand has a covering now making it very pleasant for the spectators. Miss Mary Clodfelter relumed to Portland Monday. Prf 7ir who has been teach ing in the public school returned to hs home at Eugene Monday. Claude Estes returned to Walla Walla Monday. Sidnev Parker, who exercises jurisdiction an justice of the peace and notary public over a secuon ot Lake county larger than Rhode Island is visiting here. Squi'e Parker is a son of Wm. G. Parker, a pioneer of '43 well known in this county. His aunt, Mrs. Teth- erow is still living, and it was to visit her, Squire Parser came over from Salem after attending to some matters before the land board there, The Squire, without any good excuse, has been living the life ot a bachelor on the lonely nlaina of Lake county, but it would be hazardous to say he will return a bachelor. ti Pnar1 nf Directors has re- X aiw -Wed Prof. T. Paddock sang "At the Gales of the West" in a plea3ing manner Th subiect for the evening ser yices was "The Wilderness and the Rnae." A duet "Love Divine was bv Mrs. J. E. Kirkland nd Mrs. E. E. Paddock. Mrs. J E. Kirkland's solo "Flee as a Bird" was nicelv given. The church was beautifully decorated for the occa sion with roses and ivy, witn yei lnw and white bunting artistically arranged around the pulpit mak ing a most pleasing effect.
