On Sunday, August 23, a few of the many friend of Mr. and Mr. A. Alexander gathered at their pleasant home and were very pleasantly and acreeably entertain ed. The day was most enjoyably pent as the kind host and hostess assisted by their accomplished daughte, Edith, spared no pains in their generous hospitality. An im portant feature of this occasion was a most sumptoya dinner. Before the departure of the friends a de licious repast of ice cream an cake were served. A visit to this model home recalls to memory many plea sant occasions of the past and is a living reminder that life is what we make it, and the children reared in this household will go forth in the world equipped with an armor that defies the world's alurements; for the rarly home influence aod the teachings of mother have been the safe guiding star for many a ship wrecked soul, and thus da we appreciate such precious glimpses into the sacred portals of this sacred home. Pickia son was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of Mrs. Pickinsoii'a mother, Mrs. P. H. Drexler, from South Pakotu. Mrs. Drexler left her home in Marion, South Dakota, on Aug ust K'.th, coming via Isling ton, Kio Grande A Oregon Short Line, changing curs seven times before reaching her destination. Owing to crowded cars Mrs. Drexler did not enjoy the trip, as the trains were all delayed and the extensive passenger trafliis necessitated her upend ing four nights nt tho hotels. Owing to late trains she did not make connections at Den ver, but it was a fortunate es cape for her, as the train that sho intended to take was partly wrecked, and thirty passenger were injured in the collision. Mrs. Drexler says that the weather was cold and rainy when she left home; that the cellars wero full of water, hut that the crops and gardens were in fine condition. Sho is well pleased with Oregon, especially with this section of Polk county, and intends to spend a month or two here before returning home. Suicide Prevented.
