After a thorough examination the doctor took the case under treatment, and in one operation and with the use of electric ity, restored bar hearing much to our surprise and gratification. On Wednesday evening-, June 3, the many friends of Miss Lura Critchlow gathered together and gave her a most happy surprise at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Win. Fuqua, and finding Miss Lura picking over gooseberries all joined in the generally considered tedious task and the number of gallons of berries picked over by 10 o'clock was surprising. Miss Lura pro posed to change the play seyeral times during the evening, but was silenced by many voices, "not till these berrieB are taken care of properly," and as the many jokes and merry ring of laughter went round all told the tale of the social pleasure a (ftrty--of'j'oung-people can have picking over gooseberries and it was voted something new in parties. When all the berries were cared for the young people joined in sing ing for awhile, after which they de parted for their homes with a standing invitation to come and eat gooseberry pie. There are no salooHE, but plenty of good pure air and fine farms arcuud it. Thero are also some disadvan tages, the number, of vacant houses and unmarried men are surpris ingly conspicuous, and good men, too. We cannot account for either of these two existing phases, and hardly know how to class them as advantages or disadvantages. l!ut it does appear tome that if these vacant houses were occupied by nice families the town would cer tainly be in a more progressive state. A Trip Over the County. Hpeelul from Parker. Mr. Fuqua gives us a few of the ideas he gathered during his week's sojourn to Salmon liver and Silclz bay looking for cattle. "There nas not enough rain to dampen my enthusiasm," he said, 'so I made good timeou horseback, but found an abundance of mud on the mountains beyond Grand Ronde, yet some parlies were going to the seaside on pleasure trips. The mud was deep and plentiful till well down toward the beach where trayeling was better. "Most of the people are rather poor in the mountains, though there are some nice places. There is one place at the mouth of the Salmon river ' where the owner keeps 500 head of sheep. There is a mail route from Siletz Agency to Kernville, Johnson, etc. The mail carrier walks much of the distance and also has boats at different places to convey the mail matter to the different places of destination."
