Get out of your mind that a crash is coming. , Otherwise you are going to be disappointed. Tljis old ship of state has weathered some pretty tough storms but there is no log ical reason for believing that the present conditions wil develop into even a erentle zephyr. It is true that read justments are necessary, but they are coming gradually, and it will be found that there has been very little dis turbance. Back in the days when we had our little trouble with Germany, it will be remembered that , at first retrench ment on every hand was deemed imperative, yet subse quent developments revealed that the true prophets were ones who cried that business should go on as usual. It was th very carrying on of this business as usual es sential work which made it possible for this country J il 11 11 111 11 J i 1 to imance tne worm war ana sun oe aDie to tane a very important part in the struggle. So it is now. Things may not be going just as we would like to have them. . Anticipated profits may be materially reduced in all lines, yet some way or other this part of Oregon and the rest of the country for that matter will continue to grow richer and better, and hap pier if we continue to keep the smile machine working regularly. . age. Mr. and Mrs. II. R. Patterson of Portland, are spending: the week at the home of F. A. Patterson. Mr. Patterson is in the customs of fice. ' Mark Grave's has purchased from the Ace Garage a new Ford truck which is being used for deliv erinsr wood. Mr. Graves' recently purchased a woodsaw and is going into, the wood business on an exten sive scale. Donald Barton, who has been emplbyed in the A. G. Williams bar ber shop for the past few months, has gone to Oregon City. He was accompanied by Mrs. Barton and children and they may decide to lo cate there. : A party of Siletz Lumber & Log ging company officials arrived nere Wednesday and were met by the special car of the Valley & Siletz and taken to Valsetz for an inspection of the company's big mill. E3' BBB CAR. RESIDENCE PROPERTY IS RAPIDLY CHANGING HANDS MAIL DELIVERY IS PROCURABLE . Independence has an opportunity to take a decided forward step. All that will be required to accomplish this is a little more civic pride. By simply building needed sidewalks, the government will establish, a mail delivery to all parts of the city. There is a regulation of the postal department that where the revenue at the postoffice exceeds $5000 per year a delivery system will be established upon the neces sary application being made and prodded that the city has sidewalks over the entire delivery disrict. Indepen dence would be entitled to two carriers and they would be paid a salary of $1200 a year each. . The sidewalk situation is good here with a few excep tions. There is a crying need for a walk across the fill. This is very much needed even though no steps be taken to get the mail delivery. Pedestrians are now compell ed to follow the highway, and at night it becomes more or less of a hazardous undertaking on account of the automobile traffic. There are some other walks which would have to be built and ohers repaired. Still it would not be a very big undertaking for such an appre ciable benefit. . ' . There have been more transfers of ndependence residences during: the past few months than for many years. Ihe demand for residences is so keen that it is impossible to rent a desirable place and this con dition probably accounts for some of the sales. Durinsr the past few days, W. II, Boyer, a former resident of Indepen dence, purchased the Agnew proper ty m North Independence with the expectation of occupying it about the first of the coming month. Mr. Thomas of Palouse, Wash., has purchased the Ernie Johnson residence at the corner of Fourth and A and will take possession No vember 1st. Both of these sales were made by the Independence Realty company. Political Announcement The developing of the community spirit, which is be lieved will prove the, solution of the rural problem, is accomplishing something worth while at Oak Point. Under the direction of Mrs. Collins the school there has been brought to a very high degree of efficiency 'and at the same' time the community interest has been awaken ed to such an extent that parents and others residing in that locality have in reality become a part of the insti tution. Such work is successful because back of it there is a real human touch, which, of course, makes all akin. Consideration is given to the home problems as well as the school work. When pupils fyecome deeply mceresea in tneir worK parents likewise are enthused, and in reality all become a part of the school. Merchants count it an in vestment where returns are actual and provable. The expense of maintenance is comparatively insignificant. SAYLES MOTOR CAR CO. B. P. SAYLES, Prop.
