Mackoff, formerly a student at Wash
ington State College, left here last

the American army, which he told
illiterate Polish and Ukrainian troops
were his credentials ay a Red Cross
worker, Mackoff succeeded in reach
ing Uratzlav, Ukrainia, where his
family lived. The townspeople, he
said, rushed to meet him, weeping
and crying, "Here is an American, he
can bring us help."
Mackoff found his family clothed in
burlap sacking, barefooted, lacking
food and terribly emaciated fr-m
illness and under-ne-urishment, he de
claim!. They reached Warsaw by
short stages overland, and thence
came through Germany and Belgium
to France.

tation for, danger. That reputation
was acouired when the plane was In
Its Infancy, when man was Just be
ginning to master the air anu in tne
mind of the average man it has not
yet been downed. . '
Tim British air ministry collected
statistics on oil commercial flying in
that country for the last seven months
Of 1919. The results amazed even
oiiotH and pnclneers. who loW had re
garded the risk In flying as negligible.

of a total time in the air of 8,308
hours, durlne which time 51)3,000 miles
.were traveled. In all this flying In
good weather and had, one passenger
was killed In every 16,666 passenger
hourij In the air. To put it different
ly, a single passenger might expect to
fiy about 1,180,000 miles forty-sever
times around the world before becom
ing the victim of a fatal crash. That
sounds utterly absurd to tiie land
sturm, yet the British government
stands back of the rigures.
The pilots who tested experimental
planes did stunt flying and ran other
unnecessary risks showed .48 death
per 1.000 hours, as compared with the
pussenger rate of .00 per 1,000 hours.
Coming nearer home, figures com
piled by the postofflce department
show to the end of last year 405,000
miles flown with a loss of three pilots.
These pilots, of course, ran many
risks, for they carried the mail through
rain, snow and fog that blinded them.
Even In training pilots the figures
are exceedingly low. From the be
ginning of the war until the end of
1018, 17.000 men learned to fly In the
United States air service. They spent
705,243 hours In the air. One man
was killed In every 2,310 hours, or
one to about every 150.000 miles.' Wlfh

safety before us, American airplane
manufacturers are going ahead build
ing planes, confident that the realiza
tion soon will come everywhere that
man can take care of himself as sure

As you ride along this remarkable
railroad, you look out the window and
down Into the clear shallow water and
ie grent schools of fish playing near
the surfuce, and deeper down you can
glimpse now and then the shadowy
form of a small shark. On either 6lde
of you reaches away to the horizon a
vast expanse of brilliant blue water,
dotted with Islands, which vary In size
from a fraction of an acre, to perhaps
a quarter of a square mile. They are
low and flat and covered with low
growing mangroves, and other swamp
plants. Here, and there a group of
coconuts or royal palms lifts a feath
ery silhouette. Occasionally a little
shack Is glimpsed, and a fpw sails are
seen In the distance, but for the most
paVt the region Is n wilderness of blue
water, white swil and low-grow ing
jungle a wilderness that you would
love to explore In a small boat.
Of lif ynu see little. Now and then
white (locks of ibises rise from the Is
lands; a tree duck spatters clumsily
mvav from the train, or a great blue
heron trails his legs In lonely dignity
across the sky. For the most part
silence and sunlight own the place.

Knows No Domestic Problems.
Th domestic problem, which is clos
ing homes all over tire country and In
creasing the hotel population, is some
thing of which Mts. Coolidge thinks
she has no personal, practical knowl
edge. She never keeps dui one mum,
and she never has been without one.
In the fifteen years of her married life
she has had only two. ine nrsi one
she Inherited with the furnished house
Into which she and Mr. Coolidge
moved when they were married and
took with her when she moved. Tho
second came when the first left to go
and live with her sister.
There must be a reason for their
staying, It was suggested to Mrs. Cool
idge and she thought possibly there
were several. She thought the type of
maid had something to do .with it
Her's both have been American wo
men old enough to have a sense of re
sponsibility to their work and Intelli
gent enough to respond to, reasonable
courteous treatment
"A good many women who keep only
one maid have trouble In their house
holds because both mistress and maid
but chiefly the mistress, are afra d of
work A woman expects one maid to
do the cooking and scrubbing and ev
erything else and still be dressed up In

The question of the origin of the
West Indies will be decided, scientists
aver, when the indigenous animtil life
is found to be related Indisputably to
that of the South and Central Ameri
can mainland. But mammals, which,
being wingless, could not have flown
nvpr the intervening seas, are unfor-
tunatelv the most poorly represented
group of the higher life of the Antilles.

est attaches to a recent expedition to
Jamaica, backed by the American aiu
seum of Natural History, asserts an
article in Popular Mechanics Maga
zine. Believing that the West Indies
once hid a much larger mammal in
habitation than today, the expedition
concerned itself with the excavation
of fossil fauna from the Island's lime
stone caves. Many fossils were found,
several of them new to science.
Man of His Word Is Freed.
A man of his word, despite having
served a term in the. Fort Leaven
worth penitentiary, David BlatinkofE
of East Detroit, Mich., left the Kings
county court a free man after plead
ing guilty to petit larceny.
Blatinkoff was Indicted for forgery
two years ago. District Attorney
Lewis' lodged a warrant at Leaven
worth for the man's arrest when his
sentence expired, and several days ago
was notified that Blatinkoff's time
there was up. The district attorney
directed that Blatinkoff be "put on his
honor to report to him. Yesterday
Blatinkoff walked Into his office. Coun
ty Judge McDermott gave Blatinkoff
a suspended sentence.
