Mr. and Mrs.' Lester Murphy and
son, Howard, motored to Portland
Sunday where the latter is under a
specialist's treatment and is making
satisfactory improvement.; Mr; Mur
phy has just purchased a new Stude
baker Six.
G. E. Harmon, wife and daughter
transacted business in Salem and
Independence Monday.
Word from Mr. and Mrs. George
Grounds since ' arriving at their
home in California, is to the effect
that the thermometer registered 108
in the office of the Modesto Lumber
- company, of which Mr. Grounds is
superintendent. This exceeds the
heat of Oregon several degrees.
Mr. and Mrs. Perry Wells were
week-end visitors with relatives in
Salem. They were accompanied by
Mrs. C. P. Wells who had spent sev
eral days here visiting among rela
tives. Mr. and Mrs. Martie Prather of
Eugene, visited here Sunday with the
former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.
V. Prather.
Blanche Harmon visid several
days last week at the Congor and
Gobat homes near Suver.
Clifford Wells and Oscar Moore
made a flying trip to Portland for
repairs for their threshing machine.
They made the trip Thursday night
in the former's Buick car.
Mrs. Addie Harmon and Mrs. E. 1

J. Anderson motored to Monmoutn
Friday and spent the afternoon at
the Taylor Hill home. Mr. Hill is
a great sufferer of cancer of the
face. v i
. Prof, and Mrs. Reynolds are at
Lebanon with their daughter, while
Professor is taking treatment at
Sodaville Springs'.
G. W. Bowman sold his fine flock
of White Leghorn pullets to Dr. Du
ganne of Independence, 'delivering
the same Friday, the Oberson truck
of the sister city.-making the 'deliv
ery. .. v . '
Word has been received her from
Alfred Loy who is in a hospital at
San Diego, Calif., that his improve
ment is slow as he is not yet able to
sit up. He has-been remembered
with letters and cards by friends
here who are anxious for a hasty
recovery. Alfred, if able, will fin
ish his college course at the 0. A. C.
this year. Beautiful flowers have
found their way to the hospital
from soldier boys of ' his company
who also write from Corvallis.
Such deeds of kindness make a sick
room far away from home more
pleasant.
ALBANY TRIMS INDEPENDENCE
, IN BASEBALL CONTEST
The Independence ball team met
with defeat on the Albany grounds
last Sunday, the score being 14 to 3.
When it is taken into consideration
that Albany had the pick of players
from Corvallis and other paces,
making an exceedingy speedy bunch,
Independence need not be ashamed
of the outcome of the contest. Sev
eral local fans accompanied the
team to Albany.
Mrs. C. R. Ellis and family of The
Dalles are visiting at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. George Chesebro at
Monmouth.

Sunday night the Kev. H. L.
Proppe will begin a series of Bible
lectures on the timely subject of
"The Devil , His Origin, Work and
End." These lectures will continue
for esevral Sunday nights and will
be of interest to all. These lectures
will give you an insight into the
universal unreBt in the world today.
You cannot afford to miss one of
these. The first lecture begins on
Sunday" night.
In spite of the summer weather
our Sunday school has shown a
marked, increase. It meets at 10
a. hv with cesses for all ages. At
11 a. m, Rev. Proppe will preach on
the, interesting subject of "Behind
the Blood Marked Doors of Egypt."
This is a message you should hear.
It will do you good. Our loung
Peonies' Society meets at 7 p. m.
This is the society that helps young
people to a better life. During the
week we have an open night on
Wednesday for Bible study. The
Book of John forms our study. You
ought to come and get acquainted
with your Bible. All these meetings
are free. A hearty welcome awaits

cently burned mill of the Willamette
Valley Lumber company at Dallas k
being rebuilt is attracting much at

that the new plant will be ready to
