The He id lie k of the Modern ; Woodmen of America has issued to the differ nt camp clerks of the lnittd St:t8, a preliminmy state ment covering the nclion takou at the adjourned session of the head camp held tu Chicago Jwmary 23, 1912. reli' he to the proposed in creased assessments- When the one million members hav dig sted the contents of this great report it will he met with much dis u.ii roviil. The action however does not ef'ect the present members until January 1 1913, but it will apply to new members on and r.Cter May 1st next, and may work a hardship on smull orders who are dependant upon aew applicants to place the orders on g.od financial basis. The report of the committee shows plainly why t-ie change in the Plan of a sessuitv.it be-'ame inevitable, but It af orrts no relief for the thousands of hard workirg mm who have suvggl-d for yeprs to meet each monthly assessment cud often times too.depriving themselves of luxuries, and in truth necessities, that they might be able to leave something after death for the protection of those dependent ones. It may te unwise to reach a con clusion in the matter before ' re ceiving a complete report, but as it now appears to the writer the prop osition Is unreasonable and unfair to the nrary woodmen who have already reached the declining period In their career. It obligates them to pay cq almost exorbitant rate of assessment or step out on the eve of old age, where they are unable to find protection of this kind for the widows and orphans, and forfeit all they have paid in to make a fat Job for the high officers. Our new suits elicit continual praise. All of our customers in this department have been very enthusiastic about the superb spring beauty of our suit styles and fabrics, and extremely pleased with the lines of the garments. Our first values are splendid; indeed we expected to surprise the public with our regular suit values, but in order to protect our customers it became necessary to offer them for 20 PER CENT LESS And the Values are WONDERFUL STOCKTON Salem, The gfat interest which has de- lie will not le h candidate for Sna velopod of late In the affr rs of the tor Honine' place unless it is the Modem Woodmen order by reason of , rt,,,ue(t of the people. An it is light tint they should know. "BOOST" IS THE SLOGAN If a vote were taken throughout the length aril breadth of Independence on the question of .what industry exerts the greatest influence In the busvfess affnrs of this city, it Is probable that the unanimous verdict would be hops. And unquestionab ly, f'kni in its broniest stns this there are oth,r indusiries sucivss f:lly purged in this vicinity which spei-af to pile up wealth to the hus !t dnrn's interest?, chief among which is the dairy industry. In ih's de'rtiretit of the f:nn there have been givit advaticeiueuts in late years and tie man in town takes off his hat so to spak.to the Independen ce cow. With the development of the f irms an .1 their various branches of industty is seen improved conditions in t,he city, but th. re is still another industry which hrn only been slight ly touched inid one which will, when fully d -ve-lopel, irj'ce the population of this city almost thousands where we now hr. e hundreds. We refer to the lumber industry. Situated, as it is. convenient to the best timber in the world, and i almost inexhaust able supply, Independence will soon hive an industry that will be the en vy of ma ny other towns in the stiVe And this, with' the best country in Oregon surrounding the city, will place Independence head cod should ers above other sections of Oregon. This may seem like an optimistic view of the situation, but those of us who are living here five years hence will be surprised at the remarkable growth of this city Conditions have taken on t change for the better- Net forces have been brought to ber an "boost" is 'the slogan of all Independence- FULTON'S A STATESMAN ExPenator Fulton has made a rtuhlic statement to the effect that Per Cent LESS -ON WOMEN'S SUITS Oregon a, Jy tu, rj);a gUmJ to u l)U, jf !Mr. Fulton fully understood how the oflieo i earnestly "pecking the nian," j lie would doubt Iocs assume a different ; attitude at tins Htaite of the naino. And even now, if he will consent to he a candidate, we believe he will rueive the nomination ami occupy a Milt m the I'nited Scales Senate, which ht isirol al ly n.oio n n i etcut to held than any other man in the state of Oregon. Mr. Fulton is truly a. statesman. His interests are Oregon' interests and as a statesman he can he of great value to Oregon if elected to the United States Senate. It will not le an experiment as with the candidates in pursuit of that ollice. He has already demonstrated his etneieney and established a reputation second to none recorded in the house. Independence republicans will in dorse Mr. Fulton almost unanimously if he finally consents to beoomo a candidate for nomination and we be lieve this sentiment is universal all over the state. Oregon has been without represent ation during the Hourno administra tion and it is high time that the peo ple of this state exercise a little judg ment in electins; a United Status -enatoi. MISINFORMED Because Independence is making an effort to get another train between I'ortl.md and Coivallis the l'o Ik County Observe! published an article this week in which it accuses "a private individual of Independence, ' of trying to get the night train to Dallas removed. Evidently the editor mis been misinformed. No person in Independence has ever recommended such a thing, but all Independence is interested in securing a better train service mid with this in view theCom mercial Club has put forth diligent efforts for some time with the re sult that the Southern Pacific Railway Company hat investigated the matter and find it necessary. If this change is the cause of Dallas losing its night train it is because of no graft, no selfish motive on the part of Inde pendence, or no animosity toward our little neighbor on the side-track. We are all working for the good of Indepenbence and vicinity and we expect to continue even if the whole town of Dallas goes before the rail road officials with their hands full of protests. SEND HIM TO THE SENATE The mayor of Lebanon has tendered his resignation to the council be cause he cannot sanction graft. That's the kind of a man we want in the United Stores Senate. This government needs more men at the head who cannot be bought. Men whose word is their bond, who put character above wealth, men who would rather be right than to be president, and men who are willing to sacrifice private interests for pub lic good. t Our great trouble with the country today is that too many men in public life have one brand of honesty for business purposes and another for private life- MORE HIGH WATER River Again on a Rampage Still Rising. and The Willamette river has cgain reached high water mark, and this wet-k left its bank in nuay places, flowing over roads and farm lends, but no domKge has thus far been reported. During the past few days the wftfr has teen over the road on the i't t side of the river, making travel by team impossible, conse quently the ferry hut had little to do.. The water has rot reached as high a mark as it did ii January, but if the" rain continues all the week it will probably go higher. It is said that there Is more snow in the mountains now thai there was at the time of the last freshet. This being the case we may expect higher water than has yet been seen this season. Almost Lost His Life S. A. Stid, of Mason, Mich., will never forget his terrible exposure to at merciless storm. "It gave me a dreadful cold," he writes, "that caus ed severe pains In my chest, so It was hard for me to breathe. A neighbor gave me several doses of Dr. King's New Discovery which brought greatt relief. The doctor said I was on the verge of pneumon ia but to continue with the discovery.
