One cannot take a flying trip back east without finding, on his return, that the nephew he left as a round eyed baby is now in knickerbockers and Is asking questions; that the nurs ery slip he planted in front of the door just before his departure Is now Interfering with the telegraph wires and the paving. One of the best examples of phen ominal growth on the Coast Is the Pacific highway. Little more than a year ago this project was conceived as a road to connect Oregon, AVashm ton and California. It was taken up with enthusiasm by the general pub lic; and newspapers in every com munity ran column after column a bout it Before long its planners had succeeded in marking 'the highway through Washington. Now it hag gone through Oregon and is pausing for a moment on the California line. At the completion of the work in the evergreen state, the Pacific Highway Association nicknamed their road "The Road of Three Nations." They decided to invade Mlxico and British Columbia. - British (Columbia ywas more than willing. The Provincial government a propriated large sums for construc tion; and announced its intention of making the Pacific Highway pass able clear through to the Alaska bor der. The recent success of P. E. Sands in marking the trail from Ash croft to Hazelton assures the early completion of this work. Now that the Hazelton trophy- is in the hands of its winner, motorists' eyes are turned toward a similar medal, to go the first car which reaches Mexico City from San Diego. H is not likely that the golden wheel will rest long PETRIFIED FIG TREE AT COTTAG GROVE The fertile Willamette Valley was formerly the home of tropical fruit of all kinds. This theory is well borne out by the recent finding of a petrified fig and a perfect impres sion of a leaf of the same tree. It may well be imagined that what is now the Willamette Valley was in those torrid days the Garden .of Eden, and the leaf may be one of Old Adam's discarded dress suits. Of this latter, however, there is no positive proof. The specimens reffered to, were found on the farm of W. G. Gowdy, one mile from Cottage Grove, where J. M. Hamilton, an oil engineer, who recently blew in from Victoria. B. C, has been at work prospecting for coal. Mr. Hamilton has not as yet found coal, but he feels certain that he is in an oil formation, and that he will soon develope something. The specimens were found seven and one-half feet under ground and In three feet of solid rock. The print of the fig leaf is on a piece of sedi mentary chalk. Dr. W. W. A study of the rolls at the pension office dis closes the fact that while the state of Washington has the largest num ber of pensioners of any western state and Montana the smallest num ber, those of Oregon receive by far the greatest amount of money.
