many as to what can be done here.

nothing but oats and wheat will grow
here because they nave never grown

W. J. Thompson, at Portland jewel

been on quite a trip to Cascadia and
other points. They are spending a few
days in this city at the homee of C.
O. Long, Mr. Thompson's brother in
law. They are full of praise for the
minora: springs at Cascadia, and say
tint it would be hard to find a plat e

Mr. A. M. Brown, our accomodating (
and hustling second hand man, drove
out on Sunday to the fine farm of
Hanna Bros, just north of Monmouth.;
He is very much enthused over the
farm and the fine stock, and says it
is one of the very best he has ever
seen. They have everything in fine
s iape and are now working about 15
men. Such a place gives a boost to
ha whore country. These industrious
young men are doing great things be
cause they themselves are not afraid
to go ahead. They have learned how
to turn defeat into victory. They have
dona much and will do greater things.

Mr. S. W. Leonard, who lives six
miles south of Independence, was in
on Saturday and gave the Enterprise
office a pleasant call. Mr. Leonard is
surely a, hustler of the old time kind.
He had always lived in the city un
til a year ago, when, becoming weary
of the grind, he bought this farm on
which he now lives, the land is
very fine but had no buildings on it.
He lived in a tent and went at it wi i
all his might, to get a home. He built
him a good seven roomed house, a
comfortable barn and all kinds of out
houses; he had cut some 500 cords of i
wood and himsslf hauled it to Inde
pendence and Monmouth. This year
his crops are fine and he will make
at least 75 tons of hay. Amid it all
the best thing is that he and his fam
ily are content and happy on the farr
We congratulate this earnest young
man and wish we had hundreds more
like him on this fine land.
