"I liav often thoiiKht Utat the pav
Iiik of street la tho smaller towns
would gife an Impetus for growth
that would uu surprising. I ld
to notice that the talk la clrruliillng
freely In Independence relative to
paving of the several blocks of the
main part of the town. ThU will ma
terially add to the appearand and
give Independence a boost that will
put her along- aide of other cltlos
In tho valley. There la no reason why
Independence ahould not have her
share of the booming and prosperity
that la felt throiiKhout tlm valley gent-rally.
The writer has had oppor
tunity to he In clone touch with the
Improvement and advancement that
la going on In Salem and can aay
truthfully that the Imprbvciucnta are
duo largely to the push of tho people.
More largely la tho new Salem due
to street paving than to any other
influence. Thla coming year there
la proposed aomo forty or fifty block
of thla hard surface pavement. One
or two blocks In any small town Is
enouirh to ahow what paving will do
for a city. The good that would re
sult from that amount of work will
arouse the nthuslaHtn of every resi
dent, and the cry would be 'more
pavement.' One Improvement already
tinder way In Independence Is the
sewer system and that la a big boost
fcr the city. Independence already
has as fine water as any city In the
valley. Portlnnd not excepted. There
In no reason why Independence ahouk
not come to the front and take her
pluco among the productive cities of
thu valley."
