13 men undertook to swim 1200 feet
In the Willamette river Christmas
morning: and five succeeded, while
eight fell by the wayside and were
pulled into boats. There were no
casualties, but the swimmers turned
the color of a boiled lobster, and
toward the end they became stiff
and their strokes were mechanical.
There was not one cramp among
the 13.
Portland Reports of a rich dis
covery of copper ore at the mouth
of the Rogue river in Curry county
have been brought to Portland by
Isaac A. Muncy, a member of the
legislature for that county and a
miner of many years' experience in
Oregon. Mr. Muncy has placed 50
pounds of the ore on exhibition. It
carries a large percentatge of native
copper, and is said to rur. high in
gold, platinum and irridium. A spe
cimen sample from the croppings
on the ledge, upon which only the
location work ha been performed,
runs $150,000 to the ton.
Klamath Falls The dam which
crosses the Lost river outlet of Clear
