MoClure, chief of the Bureau of Animal Indus try In the Northwest, has returned from the Klamath nervation, where be went to receive for the govern meat 4000 head of younf cows for distribution among the Indians on the reservation. The contract for furnishing this large number of cattle was awarded to Wm. Hanley. of Durns, Ore. The cattle were given to the In dlans by the Government In lieu of several thousand dollars due them from the sale of Indian lands, one of the famous Southern Oregon road grants having extended across the reservation. The heads of the de partment of Indian affairs reasoned that the cattle would do the Indians more g)pd than the money, ao the change was made. Four head of cattle were given to each Indian on the reservation, ex cepting to the youngest members of each family, who received three. By this arrangement some families got as high as 35 head of cattle. v Marshfleld Man Found Killed. Marshfleld Rector A. Johnson, a young man of good family, was found on the street shot through the heart. A pistol was found near by and his watch was gone and watch chain broken ofT. After hearing what evidence could be gathered, the coroner's Jury returned a verdict of suicide. The father of the young man believes that his son was killed in an attempted hold-up, and ia en deavoring to gather evidence which will thro-v further light on the case. Alleged Land Frauds Uncovered. La Grande The charges of con spiracy to defraud, the government out of valuable Umber lands in Uma tlll county, made several months ago against J. W. Scrlber and Aa Thompson, have been enlarged to In clude 27 men prominent In the Northwest. These charges have been made openly by government attor neys and over 100 notices of charges have been sent out by registered let ters from the local land office. Ijirjre Mortgage Is Filed. F0SSI1 a mortgage hasbeen filed with the county clerk of Wheeler county by the Wasco County'Electrio & Water Power Company, mortgag ing to the Carnegie Trust Company of New York, as security for an issue of $15,000,000 worth of bonds, all the rights of way, equipment and water filings of the electric company in the counties of Wasco, Gilliam, Crook, Grant, Wheeler and Sherman. Upper Columbia to He Cleared. Portland Major J. F. Mclndoe, United States engineer in charge of river and harbor work In this dis trict, has received word from the war department that the specifica tions for the contract for removing rock in the Columbia river near the Big Eddy have been approved. The work will involve an expenditure of about $45,000 by the government. Vale Girl Weds Japanese. Vale Zoe, a Japanese, and Miss Marcla Harold, of Vale, were mar ried at Weiser, Idaho, August 10. The affair has caused considerable stir among the citizens of Vale. The bride is 21 years old and is accom plished. The groom is 27 years-old and educated, bdth in Japanese and English.
