Cleeton. of Portland Hosed the Republican catnpHlKii In Polk county Friday night with rousing speech. An lnt-rtliig mu aU al -program was rendered to open the niwtlti consisting of an insplr In aong aung by MUs Lora Craven entitled "Just Borne One," and violin selection by Charles E. lilt ka who played the f-umwit "Meludy In F," by Hubltmteln. The question of bank deposit guar antee, Injunction, corporation llcetiHo, were shown In Mr. Clifton's speech to be Impracticable. Also the ques tion of "Shall the People Rule?" wan taken up and shown to be a dma goglc appeal made by the Democratic party for the purpose of arousing the prejudice of the people ax&lnst the Republican party. The attitude of Mr. Dryan before the American peo ple was criticised and he was likened to a quack doctor who bad diagnos ed the ills of bis patient and who had prescribed a remedy which he now admits would have been fatal had that remedy been applied. Mr. Dryan was criticised as having allied himself with Tammany Hall and Ross Murphy, Boss Sullivan and the men whom be has heretofore denounced as being the hirelings of Wall street and as big a gang of boodlers and corruptlonists as ever Infested a free country. He showed that the Repub lican party bad In the last twelve years done more for the laboring people, more for the farmer, and more for the business interests of the country, and more to bring about honesty 'n politics than any other party in the history of our country had ever done. He contrasted Mr. Bryan's record of promises with the actual performances of William H. Taft, and appealed to the people to stand by the man who bad been tried for twenty-five years as a public servant and who has never made a McMlnnvllU, : : : : Oregon blunder or performed a single act;,.. a . .. . , . , i Chas. Gregory, Jtgt., Dallas. Ore. that reflected upon h a character as a a man. lie appealed to the people to stand by the policies of the pres ent administration and to cast fhelr votes for William H. Taft, who is pledged to enact those policies into law, and to complete what has been so ably begun by President Roose- velt. It was quite evident from the en tl.usiasm at the meeting that ,Polk county would be in line with a large v ajorlty for William H. Taft and the continuance of the policies of the present administration, and the in surance of . business prosperity for another four years.- It is estimated that the audience numbered about 800 people, and Interest was very earnest.
