A VISIT TO MY BOYHOOD HOME As I walked o'er the ground where I played as a child, When our lands were unfenced, and the country was wild, I felt the same breezes and could see the same birds. I gated as of yore on the fattening herds; O'er the prairies where still roamed an Indian tribe; What my eyes feasted on, no words can describe. Where, in youth I so sprightly had skipped o'er the ground, There, in soul-satisfying, true beauty I found, The same purling brook, as it babbled along, It gave the same thrill, it sang the same song. With uncontrolled joy, as in youth, danced a jig, When I saw where the stream turn ed my first whirligig. ' It meant "a "real boat on which I would ride" As I traveled o'er seas, and stemmed the high tide. Yes. The great forest trees, stand ing here were once seeds. I knew great ideas had preceded great deeds. -This symbolic paddle wheel, turned by the stream, Foreshadowed a real boat; it was no idle dream. . From Youth's budding ideas, Time had not effaced, I again trod the path that in youth I had traced. From retrospection awoke, when the beautiful flowers, Seemed to welcome roe back to my - Youth's happy hours. But Youth's spirit I'd lost that I could not regain As I looked o'er the wide fields of ripening grain. As the gentle breeze rustled the blades of the corn, I heard the old call of the old "dinner horn." . In sadness I stood there, with uncov ered head; God, alone, and his angels, could hear what I said. Yes. The dinner horn call, once so welcome to all; But father will never again hear its call. So I answered the call, as alone I walked on, To, m sadness, eat dinner, when father was gone! A 'Vision"? Ah, yes, but in truth I was there, I felt the warm sun, I breathed the fresh air. It is glorious that I, in a "vision' may roam, To view the old scenes of my once Happy Home. The body remained, when the spirit had fled, As in life, we call death, when the body is dead. The spirit goes forth, and seeks what we desire; seeking the heights to which we aspire. Our highest desires, Great Spirit, shall be, To unfold Thy great life, and draw nearer to Thee. Z. T.
