Milk Should Be Cooled Immediately After It Is Drawn. herd; but among bis cows was a crip pled, ten-.venr-old Jersey named Goldie. Old Goldie led the whole as sociation, with an annual production | of approximately 9..KK) pounds of milk and 520 pounds of fat, and an Income over cost of feed amounting to $207, 431 spite of the fuct that when the test started she had already gone three months sinee freshening. The amusing part of Goldie’s record Is that her owner tried to sell her Just before she went on test, for $75. Six months Inter he refused $275 for her. The whole herd o f which Goldie was a part averaged over 200 pounds of fat for the year. In contrast with this was another herd of 37 cows in the same association, which had been reputed to be the best in that part of the state. Yet 14 of these were sold during the year as unprofitable, and It seemed likely that more o f them would he. Similar stories come from other states. The dairy division has been giving a great deal of time to the extension of cow-testing associations throughout the country, and there are now nearly 500 associations In various states. The man who Joins a cow testing as sociation never runs the risk of selling a $200 milk producer for $fiO because her appearance la poor, nor o f wast ing his feedstufTs and work on a good- for-nothing cow because she looks like a good milker. It la both profitable and practicable to know for a certainty the worth of a cow by weighing her milk. A man In a cow-testing association lias the milk o f every cow weighed and tested once a month, from which It Is easy to calcnlate the total for a year. He saves the trouble of doing It himself by having the cow tester do It. The tester also weighs the feed, and fig ures out the cost of the m ilk; so that at the end o f a year the owner o f a herd of cows knows exactly what each [ one ha* given, what she has eaten, nnd how much Income over cost of feed she b a a brought him. Sadie came Into existence through the Irish—unless one came to believe that she Is only an Americanization of one of Sarah's many diminutives. But for the suke of etymological exactness. It is nice to believe that the Irish Sadhbh was the real forerunner of Sadie. But between the time o f Abraham's wife and the appearance of the Irish version of her name, Sarah had been adopted by other countries and had won great popularity. In England Sara licauchamp gave It vogue In the reign o f Edward I and Sarrota lie Moulton, who lived in a former reign, was also supposed to possess a nnme which was another and fnverite form of Sarah. The French preferred iarn without the “ h” nnd It still continues In great vogue there. Tltey have another form. Sarotte, which Is also popular. Ire land’s Sadhbh and America’s Sadie are apparently the only other exist ing forms. Sadie has a curious tnllsmnnlc gem—malachite, if It Is engraved with an Image o f the sun. It will bring her peace, freedom from danger nnd dlsense, and sound sleep. It Is partic ularly lucky for children, and It Is said that a piece of malachite tied to a child’s cradle will protect It from dangers throughout later life.
