For eign I orn people, who came here after the civil war, oppressed at home, brought with them re sentment to government that nat urally resulted in opposition to tr.e party in power the Republicans, and a friendship for the minority patty, the Democrats. Now along comes the league proposition which would have made us partners with the governments that oppressed them. The rejult is reaction. ir.e name ot Mark Twain was this week selected for a place in the American Hall of Fame, which is a sort of American copy of the French Academy of Immortals. Of course, selection by the governors of the hall of fame dees not assure fame or immortality to the name se lected. That will depend on pos terity. But the prospect is the books of Mark Twain, especially Huckleberry Finn, The Prince and Pauper, and Lif on the Mississippi will be read with interest by suc ceeding generations just' as the achievements of James Euchannan Eades, engineer, .and Dr. Morton, disanerer of ether as an anesthetic who also were given distinction, will be remembered in their partic ular lines. saler have announced cuts of one fourth to one third in clothing. The in stincts of the average man are good and where this is not true it is fre quently a symptom of disease, either physical or mental. We speak of intolerance as an attribute of church people. In our youth we road of the mound builders, as a prehistoric people who had ad vanced civilization and worked with copper and bronze with which the Indian was unfamiliar. Later out of mounds supposed to be thou sands of years old were dug imple ments made in Europe. During the past week in the Big Eddy sec tion near The Dalles where work men are excavating for the Colum bia Highway skeletons were un earthed and pottery and other rel ics discovered, some of them metal which caused certain state antiqua rians to say that the articles found date back to antiquity. Wright of Tort- land who says the evidence of sun worship is common among modern Indians, that he has, himself, fonnd a sun stone similar to those un- rthed and that the copper ar ticles supposed to t e of great an tiquity were probably hammered out of copper found on a wrecked vessel not earlier than 1850.
