The average man places these as his goal He dreams about having them. But the average man is slow to take a prac tical step towards that goal. He is content to dream about it and never gets there. The most practical start is to start a savings account. Rockefeller had to gave his first thousand dollars. It earned the rest of his fortune. Character Earns Crei'it Saving men not only have capital for their efforts. In saving, they establish a reputation which wi'.lnake it easy to secure additional capital when necessary. A farmer has frequent need for capital if he is striving continually to improve his property. How important it is then that he build up his credit establish his char acter. Good Furniture Is Our Pledge to You MONMOUTH HARDWARE J. E. Winegar, Proprietor With the present rate of increase in the cost of paper, a dollar bill will soon he" worth two dollars. Prices do not appear to be fulling so fast ns to tike any one's breath away. This is the season of the year when the silo gets all that is com ing to it. Election will soon be over and in stead of being Republicans or Dem ocrats, we all will become once more, just plain Americans. Did you e,ver stop to think what a bright person you would be if you could only have retained all the wisdom you had stored up at eighteen. The maple leaves are dropping on the bier of another summer and, facing the prospects of winter, the head of the house again ponders the i roblem of what has become of last summer's wages. It is hard to imagine MacSwiney, mayor of Cork, going down in the heroic class of Joan of Arc and Robert Emmett. Owen McGary or Terrence O'Dowd would have been considerably more euphonious. The development of Portland aids the development of all the sur rounding valley towns. For this reason Portland should be allowed a free rein in its port development, especially when the cost is to be borne by Portland. Speaking of utility, there is a great chance for Luther Burbank to evolve a plant from the Sunflow er, the Dahlia and the Potato that will produce edible products above and below ground and produce an ornamental plant that will delight all who behold. The governing job in Monmouth appears to be more attractive than it is in our neighbor burgs where citizens have to be hauled in off the streets and made to serve. Here we make an all evening job out of balloting for candidates for council-men. For School Books and Supplies GOTO problem now is to get enough Re publican votes to offset the Demo cratic votes he will lose on the pro ject. There is a Considerable fol lowing to both fidts, althmh we believe the great bulk of people are indifferent uul will base their votes on matters entirely separate and apart from any sort of league of nations. The personalities of the candidates, the manner of adminis tration, the prospects of bu.iness, the question of lux enforcement of lio,uor laws, the shifting of tax bur dens, protection and development of industries, a greater or lesser in fluence of government on public util ities, business methods of a.lminis trating puhilc affairs, lire m liters all of which will hnve deciding in fluences. In making any prediction as to the outcome of the election, another matter must be considered. There are three lesser parties n the field. Fiom which party will the socialists, the farmer-lator par ty and the industrial-la! or party draw their votes? Now we may speculate; a week from today, we will know. Oppoiei Four Year Term Editor of the Herald: 1 beg space in your paper to say that among the many amendments that we ure soon to vote upon, there is one that if the people will give it ci reful consideration, they will give it a negative vote, the one refer to ex tends the term of office to certain County Officers to four years, the argument put up in its favor is that we will be better able to keep, ..... , , efficient officers. People are not worried so much about keeping the efficient officers as they are about getting rid of the inefficient ones. Under the is measure the in efficient officer wouldjpractically be on our hands for four yean; under the present term of office, if he should prove efficient the people would be more than glad to put him in for two more years. Hiey tllJ us it will be less expensive, well I don't know what is mreo expensive and annoying than huving to keep in office an officer tliat is inefficient. I think the expense to the county would over balance any saving; that might be made in extending the term to the efficient officers. The recall? Well that has been tried a few times and found to be quite expensive and unsatisfactory. Therefore, be careful how you vote. G. T. Boottiby. Bryan never was called on to play a more difficult part than the one he has in the present campaign. To bcjboiling overjmentally and yet to keep still must be hard on man to whom talking is a fine art. He will have retained his own self respect, however, and will emerge with added prestige. Sometimes the best officials of a city are unofficial. Thefpublic spir ited man who is willing to drop his business and work unselfishly to avert a public danger when it ap pears, is an asset to any commun ity. Monmouth has citizens whose value to it cannot te computed in dollars and cents. The fact that they are fellow citizens adds value to the town as a school town and a city of homes.
