Prohibition may not prohibit, but it has made it a considerable hard er task for a man to make a fool of himself. Gompers advises that we should walk in the footsteps of Washing ton, Jefferson, Lincoln and Wilson; but unhappily the man hasn't yet been invented who can walk in more than one direction at a time. It is only another little incident in Cameron's career, how ever, lie has beeryit it for years and if he dies with his booU olT it will not be the natural course of events, 70,000 farmers, it is reported, have banded together to hold their wheat for a market price of per bushel. This may have the same effect as high prices for sugar. When we were paiyng 25 cents per pound for sugar it was the planters of Cuba.lfawaii. Java and other countries who profited and their products so stocked our markets that when the beet sugar crop of the United States is ready th price goes down. Thus the big sugar profits have been paid to for eign countries. With $3 wheat the people of foreign countries would lilve on oat hulls, sawdust, potatoes and parsnips, and every available ounce of wheat grown there would be tent over our borders, leaving the market so demoralized that it would take a long time to recover from it. The enlarged commercial club with its enlarged job might well relegate the'pool tables to one end of the hall and with a partition fit up the other end as a reading room. With a ban on tobacco smoke and strong language the farmers wives as well as the farmers who come to town could find there rest and rec reation, At the time the five per cent law was placed upon the ballot there were a few other reforms that should have been included. We might legislate that sardines must be two cents per can; that cats must have tails exactly eighteen inches long; that no potato must be allowed to grow less than two pounds in weight; that it is forbid den to rain on Sunday; that eggs must grow on currant bushes, that gasoline must be made out of shredded nail kegs and that thir teen and twenty three added must equal nineteen. It may be said offhand that if P. O. Powell is elected to the leg islature he will misprepresent no one while there. While he is a far mer and. orchardist and naturally leans to the interests of agricult ure, his schooling and business ex perience gives him an insight into and a sympathy with the require ments of town life.
