They will protest and roar and put up a hullabaloo for bargain effect but intelligent Ger mans must be very well aware that the indemnity part of the terms has distinct and definite advantages for them. Twenty five billion dol lars is asked of them, a sum ten times arrest as it 'took to fight the civil war', but after all it is on ly $500 apiece for the citizens of Germany and that is a long ways from selling them into industrial slavery. When it is considered that twenty five billions is the sum they are asked to pay for the good will of the world, it has commercial ad vantages for the Teuton. Without the indemnity the world would boy' cott lierman made goods. With the indemnity the world'i markets will have to be open for otherwise how can the Germans pay the sum asked ol them; There are national advantages also. The common debt will unite the German states for they can not very well separate before it is paid President Ebert condemns " their "sister republic" America for the imposition of harsh terms but h talks for effect. Freed of the taxes incidental to its military machine and with the expensive trappings of royalty lifted from its shoulders, Germany can pay its indemnity and prosper as it never has before. They have a real grievance In the lopping off of part of the nation for the establishment of smaller inde pendent powers, but this is a mat' ter of hurt pride rather than a dis tinct loss. For it will relieve them of the restriction of people within their borders while to the allies will fall the expense and taxes inciden- tal to the maintenance of arbitrary boundaries. If the League of Nations idea works out as its friends hope, it will minimise the advantage which a nation that has colonies enjoys For instance, in the United States a small state has distinct advantages over a large one for the individual has a larger proportionate influ ence. The terms handed to the Germans are fully as good as they have any right to expect and easier by far that they, themselves would have exacted of an enemy had they been conquerors. We have a fine company, the pick of thousands of men from the 4 1st Division and the best officers to be found any place. General Pershing inspected this company not long ago and stated that we were the best appeamg unit of soldiers in the American Ex. Forces, so you see we have a right to be proud of our organization.
