Among the main things that hap
pened last week was a basket ball
game. The warriors. accompanied
by a large numLer of their loyal
supporters, departed for T.iekieal
about 7 p. m. rnday evening,
When they arrived they founJ they
would have to wait for the moon to
rise, but thanks to some good farm
ers several lanterns were obtained
and ihe agme proceded From the
very first the Turple and White
triumphed. When the score wts
22 to 6 time was called for the
first half. Every member of the
team did his work well. .The two
subs taken were Leonard Comstock
and Glen Turner who did their
share although it was only shiver
ing on the side lines. The f.nal
score was Mcr.mouth 43 and Kick
real 16. Roy Smith, the referee,
gave satisfaction to loth teams.

. This good playing is due to
coaching of Harry Stine and
the
Dr.
Maurice Butler. The game sched
uled for Saturday, December 7 was
called off because of the increase in
the "fiu" epidemic. There will he
no outside games piayed until the
ban is off.
Six young men of our number
were invited to visit Miss Todd of
the Normal faculty. We sure
would like to have seen all six of
them as they sat on one davenport
with Miss Todd confronting then.
The cause of this unusual visit is
: still shrouded in the deepest

L. J. Huston, the rew proprietor
of the Citv Meat Market, took pos

his intention to run an up-to-date
shop. Mr. Huston, who has moved
into the Miller cottage on College

High School Wednesday p. m. and

his experiences while in service.
Mr. Baker has spent thirteen
months in the air service; but be
cause of the termination of the wiir
he was unable to do any iFjing "ov

Hinkle are seriously contemplating

ing for a detachment of soldiers at
Brighton, Oregon-, now is waiting
on common loggers and woodsmen,
the soldiers having been withdrawn.
Mr. Mulkey expects to get away
long enough to pay Monmouth a

Mrs. L. J. Powell was in Saleln
Sunday pfiernoon visiting her on,
Dr. Powell, who is in the hospital

John:o:i & Collins have sold their
grocery business in Independence
and will engage in othir enterpris
es. Mr. Johnson will take to farm
ing and leaves for Washington with
the intention of raising sheep. The
business is taken over by J. II. Mc
intosh, who started out as a school
teacher in Independence but who
has operated a bungalow grocery in
the northern outskirts of Indepen
dence and who now moves to t he
more central location.
Miss Edna Mills has resigned her
position as home demonstration
agent for Polk county and will take
up school teaching. Miss Mills has
many friends in the county and
while she was cordially greeted in
her work must have felt that the
people who might have benefitted
most from her efforts were not al
ways those with vhom she most fre
quently came in contact.
Because of the influenza scare
and as many of the attendants
would have to come some distance
by train, it has been thought best
to postpone the annual Butler
family homecoming at Christmas
time this year.
