Herren re turned Wedenesday from their va cation In Newport and report hav ing a fine wet time. Miss Bfamberg is back in the Normal office and started in Thurs day to clean up the large pile of work which had accumulated dur ing her absence. While away she visited the coast, Crater lake and other points. Miss Levis, who has been in charge of the office at the Normal for the past two weeks, left for her vacation Wednesday. Dee Taylor of Independence has purchased a farm in Lake county and will take up active agriculture on the same next Spring. S. T. Jones, station ajrent at In- dip ndence has gone to the S. P. I hospital in San Francisco for treat ment. I G. 0. Butler of Dallas recpntlv purchased a 16 acre tract, lying cast of Dallas, of Al Garner of Portland. John Hayes a 14 year old resi dent of Gopher valley died in the Dallas hospital recently under treat ment for an abscess of the lungs. Mrs. Fuller and Mrs Baun were visitors in Independence Wednesday. Three county auto trucks are busy this week hauling gravel from Independence to the roads south of Monmouth. Mrs. C. E. Stewart and children arrived home last Saturday from a visit to the beach at Newport. Mrs. E. W. Strong is spending the week with her son Harold and family in Portland. Alderman came down from Parker Saturday for a visit in Monmouth. A, M. McKinney of Indepen dence was a visitor in Monmouth Wednesday. Mrs. Boche who had been waiting for a telegram from her son Phillip, received the same Saturday morn ing and left for Bend where the lat ter is to meet her and accompany her to their new home at Lake view. Mr. Antwerp left this week for Newport where he expects to put his team at work, the team at 150 per month and himself as driver at (5 per day. - Loren Bartfett, wife and two small sons of Walla Walla, were visitors at R. M. Smith's Sunday. I They formerly lived in Independence. Camp Fire Picnic Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Craven and Miss Margaret Rice entertained at i a jolly picnic in honor of their house guests, last Saturday even ing.', An immense camp fire illum ined a large portion of Craven's woods for the occasion, and a large table, generously loaded with Polk county's good eatables, was in comfortable proximity to the fire. Various stunts, races, games and story-telling, interspersed with much toasting of weiners and marshmallows, detained all until a late hour. The splendid time en joyed was one to be remembered. Those present were, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hoech and daughters, Mrs. Richard Shepard and Miss Miriam Shepard, Mr. and Mrs. E. Rice and the Misses Margaret, Mary and Maud Rice and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Craven and little daughter. Miss Margaret Rice entertained a party of Shaniko friends last week end. They were Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Hoech and little daughters, Erma and Irene. ' The Hoechs are spending a short vacation in Port land and enjoying motor trips into Southern Washington and various Willamette Valley points. They were driving a handsome Peerless Eight, which elicited much favor able comment from local car own ers. Mr. Hoech is a large land owner in Eastern Oregon, and a banker in his home town, and was very favor ably impressed with crop conditions ! in Polk county. On their return to Portland Sunday evening, Miss Rice accompanied them for a short visit in the metropolis. Evangelical Church Notes Sunday, August 18. Morning Worship at 11. The joint Endeavor meeting at 7 o'clock j will be followed by the preaching i service at 8.
