When state and interstate com merce commissions are raising railroad rates, Portland lumber men are trying to get reduced rates that discriminate against interior sawmills. Pittsburg capital developing Roseburg and Iowa capital de veloping Sutherlin. Portland capital has not even opened an Oregon stone quarry. The Dalles-Work on new evaporator for Dri-Fresh Com pany is progressing rapidly. Roseburg-Dreger Fruit Com pany may enlarge packing plant next year. "Train kills six at railroad crossing," is newspaper headline of Dec. 17 and similar ones are seen every day. Why is it peo ple refuse to stop and look at railroad crossings, especially when it is to their own interest to do so. Oregon's Water Resources The natural features of Ore gonits topography, climate, rivers, lakes, and swamps -and the flow of its streams are de scribed in a report entitled "Sur face water supply of Oregon, 1878-1910," which has just been issued by the United States Geo logical Survey as Water-Supply Paper 370. The primary purpose of the report is to present information in regard to the flow of the streams, which have been under investigation by the United States Geological Survey since 1890, when stations were established on Owyhee and Malheur rivers, and by the Survey in co-opera tion with the State since 1905. Many of the records have been collected and furnished to the Survey by other Government bu reaus and by private corporations and individuals, particularly the records of flow of Columbia River at The Dalles and Cascade Locks and of Willamette River at Al bany. The length and the com pleteness of those records are due to the work of the United States Engineer Corps and the United States Weather Bureau. The report will be exceedingly valuable to engineers and others engaged in the development of the water resources of the State. It may be obtained without cost by applying to the Director, U. S. Geological Survey, Washing ton, D. C. The results of stream gaging in Oregon during recent years are published as parts X, XI, and XII of an annual series entitled "Surface water supply of the United States," the division be ing due to the fact that some of the streams . discharge into the ocean, either directly or through Columbia River, whereas others discharge into the land-locked lakes of the Great Basin. Klam ath River, which with its tribu taries forms one of the larger river systems of Oregon, .flows to the ocean through northern Cali- ornia; and Goose Lake, which oc cupies a valley in all essential re spects similar to the valleys of the Great Basin lakes and has at present no surface outlet, is con sidered part of the San Francisco Bay drainage basin, because it has within historic times over-1 flowed southward into Pit River.
