Hinkle and sons have gone to Alsea to bring over an engine from the Strong mill. A. N. Poole was at work yes terday fitting screen doors for the Monmouth Mercantile store. Miss June Hess of Dandon is here visiting her sister, Mrs. A. H. Craven, and will remain for the summer. Mrs. J. F. Miller of South Bend, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Force, is here visiting relatives and friends. W. H. Haydon of Walla Walla. an old acquaintance of the Pyles family, was here this week hav ing a look at the country. Judge Hewitt of Albany was here Sunday and Monday looking after probate matters connected with the estate of D. M. Hewitt The Dallas and Independence baseball teams played a game last Sunday at Dallas in which the Dallas team won by a score of 11 to 7. , Report comes that the basket social at Elkins schoolhouse last Saturday night was a big success. The proceeds of the baskets were in the rise of $40. Postmaster Parker was a Dal las visitor Tuesday and Wednes day left for Portland to attend the Postmasters' convention and take in the Rose Carnival. The management of the livery bus;ness here changed the first of June, J. W. Sullivan having bought E. E. Rake's interest. Mr. Sullivan now runs the busi ness alone. Dr. Matthis was called to Cooper Hollow one day this week to sew up and dress a foot for Wendell Lefever which he had split open with an ax and which had bled profusely. The wound is healing nicely. Joseph Eogynska arrived home a few days ago from Colton. Wash., where he served as as sistant to the principal of the school. Mr. Bogynska has se cured a principalship at another place where he will have eight teachers under him. Mrs. D. L Strong of Mauston, Wisconsin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Sturkiri is expected to arrive here tomorrow on an ex tended visit to her parents. She is visiting the Rose carnival in Portland this we&. Her sister, Mrs. F. Robinson, and son, Wil fred, of Salem, will also arrive here Saturday. Ed Rogers was in town vester-: day making preparations to begin ; putting clover ensilage in the silo for Thomas H. Gentle today. He : expects to fill his own silo next week with clover. Dr. F. R. Bowersox and daugh ter, Mary, went to Portland Wednesday. Mr. Bowersox is expected to return today but his daughter will visit friends there for a week or two. A. H.
