H0W- DID YOU DIE? By Edmosd Vasce Cook in Zios's Ensiun. 9 DiJ you tackle the trouble that came your way With a res.lute heart arid cheerful? Or hid your face from the light of ifty With a craven soul and fearful? Oh, trouble's a ton, or trouble's an ounce, Or a trouble what you make it, And it isn't the fact that you're hurt that counts, But only how did you take it? You're lieaten to earth? Well, well, what's that? fome up with a smiling face, It's nothing against you to fall flat, But to lie there, that's disgrace. The harder you're thrown, why, the higher you bounce; Be proud of your blackened eye! It isn't the fact that you're licked that counts; It's how did you fight-and why? And though you be done to the death, what then? If you battled the best that you could; If you played your part in the world of men, Why, the Critic will call it good. Death comes with a crawl, or comes with a pounce, And whether he's slow or spry, It isn't the fact that you.re dead that counts, But only how did you die. In this work the west has already been very active, for fire pre vention west of the Rocky Moun tains has reached a well estab lished basis. For the past five years, the Northwest has carried on a live campaign of publicity, setting forth the results of forest fires and urging the help of the comr munityin suppressing and pre venting them. Various kinds of notices have been freely posted, -and circulars have been dis tributed among young and old everywhere. Monmouth, Oregon ly. Every camper that enters the woods knows that he must not throw away a match until he is sure it is out; he will not drop a burning cigarette or cigar butt; he will not knock out his pipe ashes while hot, or where they will fall into dry leaves or other inflammable material; he will not build a camp fire any larger than absolutely necessary, nor will he build it against a tree, a log, a stump, or anywhere but on bare soil; he will not leave his fire until he is sure it is out; he will not burn brush or refuse in or near the woods if there is any chance that the fire may spread beyond control or when the wind may carry sparks where they would start a fire; if he discovers a fire in the woods and can't put it out himself, he will notify the nearest forest guard, ranger, or State fire warden. In fact, he will be just as care ful regarding fire in the woods as he is with fire in his own home. He will not only do all these things himself, but he is so well convinced of the wisdom of fire prevention measures, that he will urge it upon his friends and neighbors and thus help the good work along.
