The troubles or ditliculties or dangers that are encountered by others make u strong appeal to them a ml their first thought is to give all the help they can. Nor are their sympathies stirred alone by the tribulations of human beings; birds ami animals coming in for their share. These rejections are suggested by two things tli it may be seen in Kugene. In one lawn a bowl of water, fed by a pipe, h is been placed high up on a tree, so that the birds may come and drink and bathe and still be safe from marauding cats. The owner of the lawn was prompted to erect this aerial bath by seeing a cat stalking the birds that came to drink at a pan placed under a hydrant. At another home a table has been erected in the bac k yard, and upon this crumbs are spread for the birds, so that the birds may come and eat when ever they will, ami still be free from danger. And the birds appreciate the kindly act. They come in numbers every day. These little acts of thought fulness refute the cynical state ments that are so often made to the effect that this is a world whose principal business is to look out for Number One. They prove that the rights of others even though the others be only birds are still considered and looked out for. If our moral teachings are sound, these kindly little acts will be found charged up to the credit of the doers when the final accounts are balanced. Eugene Register. News that Japan wants a re newal of the five years arbitra tion treaty with the United states indicates there is little danger of hostilities between the two nations. Seemingly the Japanese are no more anxious for war than are Americans and they will not take the California anti-alien land law as a deadly insult. It shows the Japanese are more sagacious than they are represented by military writers. Either that or else they have inside information the Panama canal could be made ready for the passage of a fleet within a very short time if nee cssarv. East Oregon ian. MOMiOUTH SCHOOL LEAPS til Results of Eighth Grade Exami nations for School Year 1912 13 for Polk County Following are, the results of the eighth grade examinations for Polk county for the school year 1912-13: There were 241 pupils who wrote in the examinations, and 212 passed successfully while 29 failed, making a percent of 87.9 passing-. There were 4t schools having pupils writing: in the examina tions of which 20 schools had all pupils passing. The Monmouth class of twelve passed with the highest average in the county, having a class av erage of 95.8 per cent: the Bethel class of five pupils made an aver age of 915 per cent, while the Falls City class of 21 pupil- made an average of i3. 7 per cent. There were no failures in spel i ling, and 9-1 pupils made 100 per cent in Agriculture, I j Miss Francelle Hawley, of the J ! Monmouth school, made the i highest average in the county, I having an average of 99.5 per I cent. The Bridgeport school of 2 pu : pils made a class average of 94 .15 per cent. i The graduation exercises for all pupils in the county will be : held at the Rickreall picnic on ; Saturday, June 21, at 1:30 p. m. ; This will be the largest class ev !er graduated from the eighth 'grade in the county. ; The address to the class will be given by Mr. J.
