Peace In The Near Kant Peace is finally declared as le tween t he Turks ami the allies, an,l a situation that seemed at one siine to verjje on a world cataclysm is averted. That is one of the fruits of peace. The! Turk is not driven out of j hurope, as enlightened people of the West had at least hoped. He still retains a foothold by the grace of European diploma cy, but his power is reduced and his influence in European af fairs minimized. He may no longer be the scourge to Chris tian civilization that he has been, and for that result, which is another fruit of peace, the world owes thanks to Bulgaria, Greece, Serviu ami Montenegro. In the lay sense, peace has been declared upon conditions which do not insure even handed justice to the victorious liai ticipants in th? war. Plucky little Montenegro, which struck the first blow, and many a sub sequent one that counted much for the discomfiture ami defeat of the Turk; that single-handed bravely contended for Scutari until that stronghold fell, was denied what the sense of com mon fairness in men denotes to be its due. There is no doubt hut it was the lingering spirit of absolu tism, as manifested by Austria, that at one and the same time protected the Turk and cheated the little kingdom of Monte negro. It was a case of might enforcing what might contended to be politic, and in that justice to the weak received very little consideration. It is also to be noted as peace is declared that the old-time prospect of .the formation of a Balkan confederacy, and there by the gradual development of a new power in Europe, has gone a-glimmering. Probably the tempers of the allies them selves was much to blame for that; but it is fair to assume that the spirit of mutual jealousy and contention among them was worked upon diplomatically from the outside. At any rate, the world is not to know what confederated autonomy would do for the people of the Balkan Peninsula, for the net result of the war is the circumscription of the Turk. Telegram. Peace In The Balkans It is gratifying news from a business standpoint that the war between Turkey and the Bal kans is finally ended and that a peace treaty has been signed. The Balkan war was an ex pensive affair and it had much to do with the stringency in the money market. It is estimated the war cost .1500,000,000 at the least estimate. Furthermore while the war was on there was also a possibility of trouble that would involve other nations. The peace treaty and the virtual withdrawal of Turkey from Europe ends nil of this. It will not be long until the strife be tween Greece and Bulgaria will be stopped and Mother Europe will be able to occupy herself with more useful work. The benefits will be for this country as well as for Europe. East Oregonian. The barbarous- Turk has had all the fighting he wants and Europe is seemingly settling down to peaceful pursuits, but in Mexico it is different The lighting still goes on ami the thing least thought of with the Mexican seems to be "peace." They have been in insurrection so long that the det-ire for slaugh ter has apparently gained such hold ifpon them that they have little regard for life.
