FALLS CITY ITEMS Mr. Y. A. Bowman and family of Airlie, moved to Falls City Monday. Mrs. E. E Gilliam, of Salem, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Y. R. Moyr. Mr. II. R. Lowe has sold his barber shop to S. L. Gales and Aris Moser. of Portland. Miss C. Palmer, who is teach in? school in Independence, visited in Falls City Sunday. T. B. H,ooker went to Bend Monday to see Jim Hill drive that golden spike in the new railroad; Mrs. Y. H. Flower went to Monmouth last Friday for a visit to her parents, Mr.- and Mrs. Robertson. Married In Dallasr Sep. 30, by Rev. Leon Myers, pastor of the Christian church at that place, Mr. C. Y. Moyer and Miss Gertrude Cobb, both of Falls City. Charley O'Brien had charge of serving the edibles at the barbe cue Thursday and Friday. He .was assisted by Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs. T. Bell, Mrs. G. L. Mc Murphy and Mrs. Bert Wonderly. The Fair has come and gone like the summer birds away. It was the finest one, held in Falls City, and was a success in every way. The exhibits were perfect ly grand, and the barbecue dinner that was served on both days could not be excelled. Rev. F. M. Waehlt, the new pastor of the M. E. church, . moved here Tuesday and will be at home to his friende as soon as his wife arrives. They will reside in the parsonage which has recently been papered and painted and otherwise improved. Newport, Or., Oct. 9. -While out bear-hunting last evening, about four miles-northeast of this city, Jerome Young accidentally shot and killed Fred, his fifteen-year-old son. Young had climbed a tree to take a look around and was descending when his 30:30 rifle caught on a limb" and was discharged; the bullet struck his son, who stood underneath the the tree, in the abdomen, passed through his body and made its exit through the spine, making a fearful and deadly wound. The grief-stricken parent hurried the wounded boy to the Monterey Hotel about two miles distant, and the nearest point for as sistance. A telephone message to this place brought out a phy siciai and the mother, who ar rived just as the lad was breath ing his last. He was conscious long enough to recognize his mother before he died. Mount Angel, Or., Oct. 9. Following a careful investiga tion by a mining expert, an eight-foot vein of bituminous coaking coal was discovered on the property of the Benedictine Fathers, 15 miles east of Mount Argel. It had long been the be lef of the owners that their fountain property was pregnant ith iarge veins of bituminous coal. Every indication that the Jand is coal-bearing is present, but up to the present time little Orno prospecting has been done, nr has there been any develop me"t work. It is ; situated in the new Crider brick, and contains 35 steam-heated' rooms, modern in every respect. Mr. Berry expects to run a first class grill in connection with the hotel, and later may put in a private telephone exchange. ' Surveyed to Coast. Surveys have been completed ! for the railroad which the Falls City Lumber Co. will build to! bring logs from the Siletz Basin i to the mill at Falls City. A.! Porter has had charge of the! surveying party and states that the road will be 12 miles long. Work will commence immediate ly on the construction of the roadbed, which will include 12 trestles. The section penetrated is the richest body of standing timber in- the world, and Falls City will be the central distribut ing point. The company's planer is equipped to cut 100,000 feet daily. Itemizer. BEES AS BUILDERS. ' Marvelous Instinct Displayed In Con structing Honeycombs. From the viewpoint of the stu dent of natural hisiory mul others interested in mathematics, struc tural engineering and the marvel ous instinct displayed by titiv in sects there are more things than honey in a piece of honeycomb. A. II. Oodard, writing in the Scientific American, says that one of the most interesting features of the work of bees is the home and storehouse which they build for themselves. Nearly every one lias seen a piece of honeycomb, but prohablv few realize how perfect a piece of archi tecture it is for' the purpose intend ed. It is perfect because it combines these three qualities: It has no waste room, it lias the greatt pos--sible strength, and it is constructed out of the least possible material. - If we look at the face of a piece of comb we observe that the cells are six sided. Did you ever stop to think why? The answer is because that is the only shape that will ful fill the above conditions. In the first place, there are only three forms of cells that can be placed side by side without leaving waste spaces between. These are the tri angle, the square and the hexagon. Secondly, the more nearly round a hollow object is the more pressure will be renuired to crush it, a fact well known to every one, and. third ly, the more round it is the less ma terial will it take to complete its peripheral wall. One might almost imagine that these last two facts are recognized by the boas them selves, for in the case of a special cell that they construct for their queen, where there is only a single cell built up on the edge, this cell is always round and not hexagonal. New York World. The Radiant Boy. An interest ins; house of commons ghost is the "radiant boy." This child ghost has been many times seen and heard. Its complexion is of the collorlcss purity of Chinese white, a halo of silver sparkles about its head during its perigrina tions. and its eyes gleam in their sockets like bright electric lamps. It is evidently in agony, for the palms of its hands are stiff and turned downward, and as it p;ices from room to room it gives utter ance to moans of anguish and never lifts its gaze from the floor. So far as can be ascertained this particular ghost has no prcspectral history, and why it should have chosen the house for its haunt is a mystery. Ambergris. Ambergris, the valuable sub stance used so extensively in the manufacture of perfumes, is the product of the Eperm whale and is found only in ''sick" whales that is, its presence is not normal, but is caused by a pathological condition of the intestines. It has been found floating upon the water and is also taken from the intestines them selves after the whale has died or has been killed.'
