001011 8 LOCAL 4ND STATE NENS 8 AN ODE TO ED'S BEDROOM A. N. Halleck had business which took him to Dallas Tues day. C. H. Carter purchased a Deer ing binder of Winegar & Lorence this week. Mr. Ira Phillips, of Dallas, was a business visitor to this place Sunday morning. W. H. Steinberg, of Jefferson, has bought the Thomas Small property and will move here to educate his children. Miss Mabel Manerude, of Eu gene, is here for a visit of several weeks with her friend. Hazel Lorence. Charles E. Herren has been em ployed this week hauling grave for the construction of street . crossings for the city. Jesse Simpson, of Eugene, visited his parents here last week. Richardson Sr. Monmouth St., Independence, Or. Mrs. DeWitt's grandson, Mr. O'Brien, wife and child, are vis iting her week this. Mr..O'Brien Js just recovering from a very painful operation which was per formed some time ago. C. R. Bookey and wife and Mrs. Bookey, mother of C. R., located in Monmouth again, the latter part of last week, having returned from South Dakota, where they had moved from this county last fall. According to the Independence Enternrisef our sister city has contracted with a Portland firm to have three of its principal streets paved with rock and ce ment. The work is to be com pleted by September 10th, and will cost $13,950. Mr. and Mrs. II. K. Sickafoose returned home, Sunday, from the logging camp above Falls City, where they have been employed for some time. Mr. Ssckafoose has been elected janitor of the Monmouth school building. Mrs. W. A. Wood is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Emry, at Hood River, having gone there from Portland at the close of the Christian church convention while Rev. Wood returned home and is doing the bachelor accom phshment in the culinary art Mr. Wood says he has seen things he enjoyed better. S. W. Ostrom and C. C. Pow ell have opened up an electric supply store in Thomas Boulden' building on Main street and ai asking the patronage of Men mouth citizens. Both are young lads who have been delving into the secrets of electricity ant should be encouraged in thei enterprise, lhey propose not only to sell electric supplies-but to do wiring and such work as belongs to the business. See their advertisement elsewhere. A. C. Hampton, son of our townsman, D. M. Hampton, who has been principal of the Pendle ton high school for the past two years has asked and obtained leave of the school hoard to go . . to New York where he and his wife will attend school for two years. D. M. Hampton received a letter a few days ago that his son and wife would start East this week stopping in Colorado to visit Mrs. Hampton's rela tives. We understand that Mr. Hampton is to take charge of the Pendleton high school again on his return. ' UWIS I -owe JOURNAL PATTERNS John Doughty is building aj barn for J. B. Stump. The hot weather has vanished and everybody is contented. Robert' Herren, of Portland, visited relatives here and at Buena Vista several days last week. Mrs. Mary Stine returned home Tuesday evening from Pullman, Washington, having spent some time visiting on her way home. R. McRevnolds arrived here the latter part of last week and is making some improvements to his property. Mr. McReynolds has been stopping at Sutherlin, Oregon, for a few months. Elsewhere we made mention that the ordinance of baptism was to be administered at the aptist church Sunday evening, but have since been intormed hat the baptism will not take place at that time. Ed Huber has added an addi tion to the Monmouth hotel. He has curtained off a square of the atmosphere outside his bedroom window which he occupies as a sleeping apartment. There is nothing like comfort. Mrs. Jane Turner, of Lewis- ville, died on Friday of last week and was burried Saturday, aged about G3 years. She was a na tive of Porter County, Indiana. E. Chase, of this place, was in attendance at the funeral. Sunday was excessively warm, here, mercury registering 100 in the shade, while at Newport, vis itors to the beach were standing around and shivering with their overcoats on, so reported by a tarty who came from there on Monday. Mr. Alfred Lunn, one of the instructors at the 0. A. C, was a guest of Pres. Ackerman and family several days this week, returning to Corvallis Wednes day.
