FRIDAY, DEC. 9, 1910. In connection with President Taft's visit to Panama comes the claim tliat the Panama canal will be one of the great achieve ments of the Republican party. That certainly has a line tinkle and ought to be sweet music to the ear, especially, when we re member the long years of effort it took to get the Republican party ready to take hold of that particular proposition. We would rather view it in the light of an achievement of the Uni ted States government which was urged by the people gener ally without regards to party afliliation. There were power ful interests in opposition to the project and congress kept hands off about as long as it could re sist the pressure and its mem bers hold down their seats. 5V "For the ihst time in years a saloon man was haled before the court in Portland and lined for selling liquor to a habitual drunkard. It is surprising that saloon men will go on and on breaking the la w just to secure the few miserable nickels in the pockets of these poor old sots." says an exchange, but we think it still more surprising that an intilligent public will continue the saloon keeper in business and license him to make sots of themselves, their sons or their daughters, to secure their dollars and nickels, knowing fjill well that the business will leave sots in its onward march of ruin and death. 7,000,000,000 cigars last year, to jg say nothing- of cigarettes and ; jg tobacco. By approximate com putation this is about eighty-one cigars for every man, woman and child in the country; by which we hold that the American is one man who should never be admonished to "smoke up." Telegram. The Western Leader is author of the following bit of ii i ii sarcasm wnicn, oy me way, is rather appropiate than otherwise: The Leader is surprised and displeased at the suggestion made elsewhere by R. F. Johnson as to utilizing the vacant Normal plant. A cannery, forsooth! Why give Oregon food when it wants drink? Oregon voted for booze and knocked out two Normals. We suggest that a distillery be es tablished in the young ladies' boarding hall and a brewery in the $40,000 main building. Ore gon will then reconize our enter prise with glad acclaim. This state is not so slow. There are some things it appreciates, even though it does'nt want trained teachers for its children." To Advertise Oregon. That Governor-elect Oswald West is alive to the advertising needs of Oregon is indicated by his declaration that he will favor an appropriation of $20,000 for a book setting forth the climatic conditions ofO regon and the re sources of this state. A few years ago some work along this line was done by the state conservation commission. A booklet was issued containing valuable data with reference to rainfall, altitudes, stream flows, temperatures, etc. It was in formation of great value to those who are working for the further settlement and upbuilding of the state. The state government can well afford to lend reasonable assist ance to the cause of a greater Oregon. East Oregonian. 3EJE Don't Rubber Round Just Come to A he Rueft', the San Francisco boss and grafter, has reached the end of the legal rope which be has been trying to insert be tween himself and the jail, and must go to pristi. He has been given a term of fourteen years in which to contemplate the much grafting lie has done, and when memory, with its kaleidoscopic changes, brings up the cases where other grafters have won out against justice, lio doubt but that Rueff .will, in stead of being sorry for the w rou its he has done, lament the fact that he was caught am found guilty. And now con.es the intelli gence that Dr. Cook will make bis appearance again this month, coming out of seclusion and will try and reinstate him self in the good graces of the pulaic again. Ills claim now is that if he did not reach the North Pole, he at least thought that he found it, and he lavs the blame for any wrong conclusion reached, upon the hallucina ting effect of the high latitude of the Northern part of the sphere. Emperor William of Ger many has put his veto upon beer- drinking in his army and navy on the ground that it im pairs the etlieieney of the men.
