Through an oversight, the
name of L. C. Hoover was omit
ed from the list of Polk County
prize winners at the Oregon
State Fair, he having taken 1st
prize on S. C. Rhode- Island Red
cockerel.
A little daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Reuben Hastings, of Airlie,
was thrown from a horse Thurs
day of last week and one of her
arms broken near the wrist. Dr.
V. C. Staats, of Airlie' set the
broken bones. The child was re
covering nicely at last report.
Ben Roff meets Instant Death at
Simpson Brother's Camp
Airlie, Or., Oct. 1-Ben Roff,
a laborer at the Simpson logging
camp on the Big Luckiamute
River, was struck on the head by
a heavy chain and instantly killed
late Friday afternoon.
The accident happened at 6
o'clock, just as the men were

Roff was assisting in hauling out
a load of logs when the chain
holding the load gave way. One
end of the chain struck him on
the baCA of the head with teriffic
force and killed him instantally.
Mr. Roff was 25 years old and
was married. His wife was at
the logging camp at the time of
the accident. Their home was
in the Alsea valley, from which
place they had moved to the
camp to work, Mrs. Roff is a
daughter of John Miller, of Airlie.
Victim of Diphtheria
The 4-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. H. A. Flint died of
diphtheria in this city Saturday
morning. The family arrived in
Dallas from Oklahoma about a
week ago and all have been af
flicted with the disease. Dr.
Starbuck, the attending physi
cian, says the case of the father
and mother are not serious, The
family is being cared for by the
neighbors. -Polk County Observer.
Boy Shot In Arm
Lyle, the 11 year old son of
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Shreve, was
painfully injured Monday after
noon by being accidentally shot
in the right forearm by a boy
companion, Leo Willing.
The boys had a 22 calibre rifle
with which they were shooting
at a mark back of the electric
light station, when the gun was
accidentally discharged, the bul
let striking the Shreve boy just
above the wrist and ranging up
ward toward the elbow.
The lad was taken to Dr. Brew
er's office where the injury was
dressed. The bullet could not be
located and it is thought it has
lodged between the bones. It
will not be disturbed unless signs
of infection should deqelop. The
lad is now doing nicely and the
injury promises to heal rapidly.

entered the Dallas College
Wednesday.
Mrs. Charles Hubbard went to
Smithfield, Wednesday, to visit
her mother and friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Sutherland are
enjoying a visit with Mr. R. C.
Thompson and family, of Sparta,
Wisconsin.
Ira Lowe, after spending a
few days in town visiting his
parents, returned to his home 1 1
Portland Monday.
Miss Jessie Pugh has resigned
her position with the Falls City
Lumber Co. and will soon return
to her home in Salem.
Mr. Dodson, and family of Eu
gene, haved moved to town and
at present, are located in Mr.
Mathews house on Bridge St.
Mr. Henry Pfandhoefer left
for Corvallis Sunday, to resume
his work at the 0. A. C. as a stu
dent in electrical engineering.
Mrs. C. C. Wintermute who
has been visiting at the home of
Mrs. Alice Courter, returned to
her home in Portland the last of
this week,
Mrs. W. B. Drake, who has
been visiting at the home of her
son, Mr. E. Y. Richey, left this
week for her home in Myrtle
Creek, Oregon.
Mr. W. C. Cornelison and
family arrived in town Wednes
day from Missouri, and will
make this their future home.
They are well pleased with Ore
gon and will reside in Cal Cram
er's house for the present.
Mrs. P. J. Schubert and son
left for Portland, Wednesday,
where they will hereafter reside.
Mr. Schubert has been in Port
land for sometime, looking up a
location.
Mrs. Wm. Hinshaw has taken
pity on four of our fair teachers
and will give them a home with
her this winter, they are Jean
Hazel Kuykendall, Chloe Palmer
and Elsie White.
