Mr. Burrows south of town is in quarantine with scarlet fever. Dr. Huewitt was a passenger to Portland Wednesday morning. Mrs. D. A. Hodge and daugh ter, Margaret visited Portland this week. Mrs. Clara Hart of Salem visited her mother of this place, Mrs. Fisher. Miss Hellen Cooper and Paul Belt were married in Portland a short time ago. Ed Clodfelter and wife of Port land, -visited his sister Mrs. A. C. Toore last week. B. F. Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Mays spent Tuesday in Salem, returning in the evening. George Conkey has moved into the large house on Fifth street, known as the Doughty house, -v Miss Lenora Shank returned Tuesday, from Eastern Washing ton, where she has been for some time. , : . , Mr. Hooper, treasurer of the County Sunday School Association was a passenger to Falls City Wednesday morning. Mr. Boydson, is moving his dwelling from its present location near the grove, to a lot north of Obersons, near the depot Newton Bros, slaughter house at Talmage burned to the ground one night last week. It is not known how the fire started. Miss Whitney the seventhgrade teacher m the public school here, resigned her position and wil leave next week for Eastern Ore gon. John Bohannan has returned from Corvallis, where he went to see the foot ball game between Corvallis and a team from Wash ington. The Corvallis team lost the game. The Merry Maker's Club was entertained by Misses Pearl Per cival and Bessie Butler at the home of I. N. Butler Monday evening, Nov. 15. About twenty young people were present and the party proved a delightful so cial affair. Progressive whist was played and . prizes awarded the winners, and at a late hour lunch was enjoyed Mor mouth High School Notes Although there is not the ad . i. - IT l i . vai.ageoi a iNormai school in Oregon, the young people of Monmouth are desirous to show their ambition in getting a good education during their absence. Accordingly on Oct 5, 1909, a body of students, hereafter to be known as the Monmouth High School, assembled in the library of the college building, to elect officers of the student body, and to draw up a new constitution. The President of the student body is Ray' Chute, vice-president, RanieBurkhead; secretary, Naomi Stengel; treasurer, Lorena Daniel, and sargeant at arms, Ervin Springer. There are thirty-eight students in this association constituting the Freshmen, Sophomore, Jun ior, and Senior classes. So far they have done very good work. and give fair promise to continue. The Principal, Mr. A. L. Clark. and his assistant Miss Anna Godbersen, are excellent in structors, and the school is to be congratulated upon securing them. . During the year, debates and athletes will be fully considered, and as the debating team had such good success last year, there lS no reason for not having bet ter success this year. The students are going to show that they can and will win the esteem of all and cause them to be proud of their existence. WISE AND OTHERWISE I wonder why they laughed.
