Our wife is sick this week and we are late on that account, also our Independence correspondence went wrong and was a day late getting here, in other words it took it two days to get two and onehalf miles. Pretty swift traveling for mail matter. Zook the Painter, .will hang your paper. Lester Davis and Miss Eva Davidson were married at Ash land, July 22. The young peo ple kept the matter secret from all their friends until last Satur dap, when they moved into their new home in that city. Mr. Davis is a grandson of Mrs. Sarah Davis of this place and Miss . Davidson is a cousin of the Misses Maggie and Allie Butler. Do not forget that R. M. Wade still has the genuine Oliver goods. The Y. P. A. business meeting and social of the Evangelical church was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Murdock. After the business of the Society and program were carried out all helped in making the evening pleasant with games of various kinds. A dainty lunch was serv ed consisting of ice cream and cake. All present reported a fine time. Dr. R. E. Duganne, dentist Office over Independence National Bank, Independence. Miss Ruby Shearer came up from Portland the first of the week for a visit with friends. Tuesday she accompanied J. B. V. Butler and family on a pleas ure trip to Newport where they will take on some of the color imparted by the sun and the sad sea waves. J. B. V. will not need any color as he got a nice lot in eastern Oregon recently, but perhaps he thinks to mix it with the ocean foam and sort of soften the high lights. Zook, the paper hanger will do your painting. A trip over the premises of J. M. McDonald, the Rhode Island Red man, shows what can be done on a small piece of ground such as we have around Mon mouth. Besides having some of the finest Reds in the country he has a couple of fine strawberry beds, one of which is just coming into bloom for the second crop. He has field corn that is over eight feet in height and still growing. Kale, potatoes and a young prune orchard fill out the remainder of his three and one- half acres. She was accompanied by Mrs. C. G. Esson. J. C. Talbot has returned from his fishing trip in the mountains The town will be supplied with fish for some time to come. Mrs. Dr. Becker is very ill at the home of a friend in Daytcn, where she has been visiting. The Dr. was called there last week. We hope for her early recovery. Myrtle Trask Flood died at the home of her parents August 17, aged 27 years. The funeral was preached by Rev. LaDow Thurs day at the family home at 2 p. m. Myrtle was a sweet girl and will be greatly missed by her i many friends. She was an only daughter. She leaves an aged father and mother and three brothers to mourn her loss. Mrs. Clara G. Esson, State Sunday School Evangelist of the Christian church, spent Saturday in our city; while here she deliv ered three excellent addresses, two in the Christian church and one in the M. E. church. Mrs. Sarah Davis, who has been here visiting her sister, Mrs. E. A. LaDow, returned to home in Monmouth Wednesday. Mrs. Davis, though not as young as she used to be, is yet a girl in action. While here she was able to roam over hill and dale and gather hazelnuts and flowers like a girl of sixteen. .
