Merle Singleton, who wa3 in

day and the remains were brought

Mrs. W. W. Newman returned
the last of the week from an ex
tended visit wi h her mother, in
eastern Washington and reports
a pleasant time, but it was rain
ing nearly all the time she was
there. Crops are fine and wheat
will be a drug on the market this
fall.
The Fraternal Union of Amer
ice held a very interesting meet
ing at their hall last Thursday
evening, June 10. There were
ten candidates initiated; four
from Monmouth and six from
Independence. The state organ
izer Chas. M. Mapes was present
also about 45 visiting members
from Albany and Monmouth,
coming in hay racks, tallyhos and
various ways. Music by the Or
chestra, after which refresh
ments were served, a very enjoy
able time was spent by all present

Mr. Allen is expected home
from southern Oregon about the
first of July.
Elmer Hunter and Clifford Wal
lace have returned after a weeks
stay at the coast.

for the Riggs Brothers.
Several farmers from this sec
tion attended the sale at the Ed.
Keyt place last Saturday.
Mrs. Cochran 2 and children,
of Carley, Washington, have re
turned to their home after spend
ing a few weeks with relatives
here.
Mr. Wallace is now driving the
meat wagon for Bly Bros., who
are giving satisfaction by hand
ling first class meat at honest
prices.
Mr. and Mrs. Cass Riggs left
Friday morning on the West
Side train for Portland to attend
the Pioneer Meeting, Rose Fair
and visit with relatives there.
Carl Crowley, formerly of this
place was badly hurt at Black
Rock a week ago. He is slowly
improving under the best of care
at the Starbuck hospital in Dallas.

Oregonian Stupidity.
The Oregon legislature has re
fused appropriation for some of
its state normal schools, thereby
closing well-established plants.
If any other state has ever been
thus stupid it has escaped our
notice. Two years ago, through
the application of their crude
referendum law, the schools did
