We are all more or less kick ers, but some are worse than others. However one who would kick at the weather we have been having for the past few days would kick if he were going to he hung. Oregon, that is this part of it, can always he depend ed on to bring things out on an average and it has not failed so far. To be sure there have been better seasons than this one, yet taking into consideration the weather that has prevailed throughout the eastern states we have been very fortunate. If we all do our duty toward our own localities and place before our less fortunate brothers of the far east, the wonderful resources that lie at our doors, then we will have done well. There is room and to spare for all that wish homes in this land of plenty, where a minimum of labor will produce a maximum of results. Taking the amount of labor and expense laid out by any first class farmer in the east, and placing the same on an ejual area here, we would see results that would be surprising to all of us. We venture the assertion without fear of successful contradiction, that nowhere in all the wide ex panse of nature is there a more favored locality, than right around Monmouth. Here the soil and climatic conditions are as nearly perfect as it is possible to get them without a special dis pensation of Providence, which but it is but fair to say that the Commissioner no doubt is doing his duty as nearly as he can under the law. The law, how ever, is only another of the num erous grafts perpretrated on a j longsuffering people by a gather ing of men presupposed to be of superior mental calitar, but who by their acts, have in the major ity of cases proven to be rank failures. The trouble with Col. Hofer in many cases is, that he tries to repeal noxious laws by personally violating them. This may bring about the desired end, but we believe we would rather let Nature take her course, un der such circumstances, for it will cost less to the individual and take but little longer to at tain the desired end. The Law Enforcement League of Polk county i doing some good work and we hope that it will continue along the same lines until tliis county is cleared of the "blind pigs'' and saloons that are operating under the name and style of drugstores. There have been plenty of drunks caused in this county where the liquor was purchased at the local drug store without even the semblance of a pre scription, some of them practi cally having thelinoleum behind the counters worn out by the steady tramp of the thirsty cus tomers going into the back room where they would help them selves to whatever kind of liquor they wanted and leave the money in a convenient place as they went out. Boys have been giv en liquor and have been found drunk from having had it in their possession without the knowledge or consent of their parents. It has been strongly hinted that summary punish ment may be meted out to some of these parties if the matter is not stopped at once. Roycroft Philosophy By Fra Elbert as.
