J. M. Staats was placing tele
phones in Monmouth on the inde
pendent line yesterday. He re
ports a rapid increase in business.
Judge W. H. Hollis, of Forest
Grove, was in the city Wednes
day looking after business con
nected with the Bankers & Mer
chants Insurance Co., of that
city. The Judge reports business
good, and judging from outward
appearances, we should say he
has not missed a meal since we
saw him last, fifteen months ago.
The Judge is a genial wholesoul
ed fellow whom it is good to meet
May his shadow never grow less.
Mrs. J. W. Rogers, of Corval
iis, is here visiting her sister, Mrs.
W. H. Lucas.
Miss Edith Wolverton was a
business visitor to the county seat
the fore part of the week.

been selected from the Senior
class by the faculty for the com
mencement exercises: Miss Ida
Goyne, Tillamook City, Tillamook
county; Miss Fannie Fisher, of
Haines, Baker county; Miss Alice
Rasmussen, Corbett, Multnomah
county; Miss Esther Larson, of
Astoria, Clatsop county; Percy
M. Stroud, Pleasant Hill, Lane
county. The selections to be made
by the class will be announced
later.
Ladies Aid Meeting.
Did you see those several buggy
and carriage loads of people go
ing out of town eastward Wed
nesday morning about 9 o'clock?
They were not bound for Inde
pendence nor Salem, but for the
home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A.
Wood. The Ladies Aid of the
Christian church to the number
of about 25, together with a few
of the brethren, spent the day
with their pastor and wife. Mr.
Wood said while he was not a
competent judge of the quality
of the quilting and sewing done
by either the ladies or brethren,
though Mrs. Wood said it was all
right; yet he was a very compe
tent judge of the good dinner
they brought, and very much re
gretted his inability, because of
lack of capacity, to do justice to
the many good things.
Such gatherings cannot but
bind the church and pastor closer
together and put spice and sun
shine in life.

W. A. McNeil and brother, re
turned Monday from an extended
visit at their home. Mr. McNeil
was greeted by the Monmouth
String Band. The music was of
a sentimental nature, one of the
pieces being "I Am in Clover
Again." His many friends are
glad to see his smiling face once
more.

from the East a shipment of the
newest things in ladies' neck
wear; including Dutch collars,
turnovers, collar and cuff sets and
