Mrs. Mark Rickard was down from Corvallis Saturday to visit her mother, Mrs. H. E. Guthrie. W. C. T. U. Institute. The Polk county institute of the W. C. T. U. was held at In dependence Wednesday April 21. The morning session was given over to the discussion of plans of work for the local unions. The afternoon devotional ser- .11 r vices were conducted Dy xvirs. Helen Harford, state vice presi dent. The following subjects were then presented for discussion. 1. Retaining and Interesting the Young People. 2. Can a Christian Consistent ly Sell or Use Tobacco? 3. The Value of Temperance Literature. Mrs. Kirk, of Independence, then ably presented the subject: Temperance in the Sunday School." after which Mrs. Henri etta Brown, S ate President, gave a short talk on the state work. Mrs. Harford in presenting the subject "When Does Oregon Ex pect Prohibition? gave some good reasons for expecting that Oregon is going dry and that very soon. Stating that a campaign was to be instituted whose slogan would be "Oregon dry in 1910." Delegates were present from Dallas, Falls City, Monmouth, Louisville and Independence. At the evening session Mrs. Harford gave a most interesting and instructive lecture on the subi ect "The Go vernment to Be. " The following resolutions were unanimously adopted: Resolved: That we regret the enforced ab sence of the County President, Mrs. Chloe L. Butz, because of the illness of her father and mother and extend to her and her family our sympathy. Schreuders. of the Polk County Bank, left for home Tuesday. Mrs. P. E. Chase went to Cor vallis Tuesday for a visit with her sister. Mrs. M. A. Rickard, who has been visiting relatives here for the past week. A. N. Poole, returned Wednes day from a six weeks job of paper hanging in Independence and will put the finishing touches on the D. M. Hewitt cottage. Miss Bernice Treanor, of Inde pendence, has been visiting the past week with the families o Edd Fuller. L. S. Fuller and G. W. Baun, of West Monmouth, re turning Sunday. Mrs. Mary Campbell gave an informal recep ion to the Whit man College Glee Club and a few friends after the exercises were over, last Friday evening. It was a very enjoyable affair.
