A site here would he expensive, and what is a greater objection, a large number of students are better off away from the allurements of a large city. Portland is the most central place, but this ad vantage does not outweigh these objections.-Portland Journal. Vastly different is this to the spirit of the Oregonian which wants everything located in Portland that has any money , connected with it, especially if there is a chance for the Ore gonian to get a linger in tin; pie. The Journal is eminently correct in this ami as a native Oregon ian we thank it for this express ion of good com iiioi) sense. We have had grave doubts for some years as to whether there was real need of more than one Nor mal school, but have of late con tended that the report of the Board of Regents should have het'n accepted by the legislature as final, for the Board had ex amined into the conditions and it should have known more about the real conditions than any one individual. The present conditions are largely the result of an itch for notoriety by one whom the people of Marion county have seen lit to send to the wrong institution and may he the means of stirring up a feeling of bitterness against that county that will eventually re sult in the removal of the capi tal. There seems to have been one fact lost sight of during the re cent Normal muddle in the leg islature, and that is a most potent one, of how the Mon mouth Normal was acquired. This school had been maintain ed for years as a sectarian insti tution and was transferred to the state with the strict under standing that it should be main tained as a Normal, yet, through the efforts of a lot of surplus garbage that escaped the Port land crematory and got into the senate of the Oregon legislature, the state has violated its obligation-has left the people without any place to train the teachers of the common schools. It is enough to make a native for swear his birthplace. Our next move should be to resign state hood and ask to have a territorial form of government arranged for us. It is perhaps well that the people have a chance to vote on n branch asylum for eastern Oregon, for it certainly is need ed by at least one individual from that part of the state. spirit is displayed by those de siring an education it will take more than the actions of a bunch of corporate hirelings from Mult nomah county to keep them down. All honor to the young women and young men who compose that body. We believe that when the matter is proper ly placed before the people of this state that they will rectify the wrong attempted, hut not yet eonsumated, by the State Senate.
