The Herald W. T. FOGLE, Editor. Entered aa second-claw matter September 8, at the poet office at Monmouth. OreKon, under the Act of March 3, 11-79. ISSUKU KVKJiY FKIDAY, BY The Acorn Press, Publishers Monmouth, Oregon. Subscription Rates One year Six months $1 50 eta FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1909 In conversation with a min ing broker this week we gained t lie information that it is his in tention to try and have a law passed making it a penal offence to misrepresent any article offer ed for sale by a salesman, whether it be' mining stock or nursery stock. This would be a mighty 'good law to have enforc ed as it would save many a per son some of their hard earned money. The smooth promoter who has some fake mining stock to sell always finds some one who will listen to him and in 'i the end he succeeds in selling a nice block of his stock. He does not care a fig for the person to whom he sells or how he got his money, just so it is transferred to the pockets that are waiting for it and from thence it usually finds its way over the bar of some city saloon or gambling dive. Such a law would also act well for the fanner who is im posed upon by the traveling vendor of fruit trees. However this class of persons is getting scarcer every year, although they sometimes impose on the unwary yet. There should be some way of getting paid for time one has to wait for their trees to come to maturity, for the buyer cannot prove his trees until they begin bearing, which will be in from three to live years from planting. When the time comes to change the charter we hope that the people of this city will see that a good majority is carried to give us the right to bond for a sum sullieient to put in a good system of water supply for lire protection. This town could just as well have a population of '2000 as what it now has had there not been too many knock ers to keep back those who would have made it the first town of the county. It might just as well have been the county seat but for the penny wise and pond foolish theories of a major ity. It is high time to get out of the rut and be somethinr more than toys that are knock ed about by chance. The man who goes about belittling the efforts of those who are trying to get on the map ought to be taken out quietly and Oslorized .... i . 1 ii. . ,i nun iiius save me ozone unit ne is pointing. of average ability and hustling qualities can earn this trip in three weeks. Is there anything else at which you can earn $."0 a week? When the matter of the road tax comes up for the votes of the people it is expected to carry almost unanimously as it is said that the city of Monmouth has paid many hundreds of dollars into the county road fund and has received but little return This town should have had the road poll tax for years, in fact ever since it was incorporated, for there being no bridges to build there was no necessity for the county doing any of the work here. A look at any of the side streets is sufficient to prove to the most obtuse that it could have been expended to good ad vantage for their betterment. Last week just at the time of going to press we were called out to look at some real estate pro positions and therefore did not get to read prooi on a lew oi the locals and some of them got mixed. Accidents will happen even in the best of regulated families 'tis said so we hope that no latalities will result from the locals getting muddled. His Sign Down.
