The city council held its regular meeting Tuesday night with the members present except Council man Riddle, who was detained at home with a very sick child. Bills were read and allowed and the resignation of Marshall John son was accepted. It was agreed that the Recorder should com municate with our members of the legislature to have the charter changed to allow the city to re tain one-half of the road tax collected inside the corporation limits. It was voted that the legislature be asked to change the charter so as to enable the city to bond itself in a sum not to exceed $20,000 for water and light purposes. A motion also passed to move the fire bell to the rear of the bakery, Council man Radek rfFering free -rent of the ground and agree ng to ring the curfew every night and in case of fire. G. W. Ebbert was granted the right to cut a tree he had petitioned to cut. Ed GrifFa was electod Marshal to fill out Allen Johnson's unexpired term. In conversation with G. T. Boothby regarding the shipping of stock we learned that this town is losing many hu drods of dollars on account of stock hav ing to be driven to Independence to ship. True the railroad makes an unjust discrimination against us in that we are charged $3.50 more for a car from here than from Independence, but we be lieve that if the matter was brought before the Railroad Com missioners something could be done to equalize the charges. When a carload of hogs is deliver ed in Independence the owners are paid for them and they pro ceed to spend the money, or at least the most of it, with the mer chants there. Now if we had the stock yards here we could reason ably expect to have the money to be spent here, which would make business much better for that reason. Mr. Boothby says that he will put in his own stock yards if the railroad will extend the switch to the creamery. He should be encouraged to do so, even if it is necessary to give him a bonus sufficient to offset the differences in freight rates and thereby keep the money here that is spent elsewhere Mrs. Mary Baker G.
