The annual election of officers of the Monmouth Commercial club will be held this evening. A full set of officers will be chosen for the pres ent year. J. L. Palmer of this citv. Peter Kurre of Independence and J. L. Murdock of Yamhill are behind a move to start a creamery and cheese factory in Dallas. Hugo Bibberstein formerly of Monmouth, but recently of Tillamook is to have charge of the cheese factory. The operetta, "The Princess of Poppyland,'.' was given by students of the Monmouth high school on Tuesday and Wednesday nights to large and appreciative audiences. The operetta was directed by Miss Bessie Bnrncourt, assisted by Miss Randall of the Normal. Miss Grace Williams was accompanist. The high school net ted over $50 from the entertainment. The proceeds are to apply on a pi ano. (. : The Monmouth high school now has an even 100 students. This is 20 more than were in school last year at this time. The Civic club is planning for a clean-up day in the near future. Evangelistic services will begin at the Christian church on Sunday, Feb ruary 18. C. F. Swandler of Port land will preach the first sermon. Glenn Work has returned from The Dalles and plans to attend the state university. Rev. Fisher, Mrs. C. E. George and Mrs. U. G. Heffley attended the Polk County Sunday School convention at Independence from Friday until Sun day. Practically all of the students who have been absent from school on ac count of the measles, have now re turned to their work. The measles have just about played out here. FERN Fern school has organized a Liberty Bell club, with a membership of twenty-seven, for the protection of sing ing and insectivorous birds. Miss Sweeney was elected director. Miss Sweeney has finished reading the popular story of "Polly-anna." and is soon to' start on "Just Da vid," both written by Eleanor Por ter. L. T. They expect to remain in the city several days. Miss Gladys Hailan returned Sun day from a week's visit with friends in Iiebanon and Albany. Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Talbot have returned from au extended trip through the middle west. They visit ed with friends in Kansas City and Chicago. A Good Roads meeting will be held Thursday, February 15, at the city hall at 2 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. M. B. Grant of Dal las spent the week-end at the home of his brother, Dave Grant. Mrs. Claud Ellison entertained Mrs. I. G. Singleton, Misses Emily Miller, Bess Lewis, Louise Haslop, and Edith Johnson, Monday evening. The ev ening was enjoyably spent in music. Edward Watson, an employee at the Spaulding logging eamp, was injured Wednesday by being struck with a tree limb. The injuries were not ser ious. The Christian Endeavor society met at the home of Mrs. Paul and elected the following officers for the ensuing year; Mrs. 1. G. Singleton, president; Mrs. Leone Bradley, vice-president; George Paul, secretary; Treval Pow ers, 'corresponding secretary; Lota Bradley, treasurer; Mrs. C. Powers, chorister. OAK SALE On Sunday, January 21st, there was a number of the neighbors gathered at the home of L. G. Miller for a social good time and a basket din ner. A splendid dinner of a great var iety 01 eatables was served at two o'clock. The rest of the day was spent with social chat and music. Miss Maude Miller played a number of fine selections on the piano. Miss Ycm Miller sang several pieces. She has an unusually fine voices and her sinking and Miss Maude's playing was greatly enjoyed by all. Abe Bartholomew, 0. E. and Will Dennis also played a few selections on vio lin and piano. The dinner was ap preciated by all but especially by George Robinson and Will Dennis who started out to sample everything offered them. But they weakened to ward the last. Mrs. Miller is a de lightful hostess and it is a privilege to visit in her pleasant refined home Those present were Mr. and Mrs. L. G. Clanfield's children have been quite sick the past week, the grip having turned into pneumonia on the little boy, but at last reports was better. Mrs. Ross of Rickreall, who has been over here helping to care for the sick at Clanfields, returned home Sunday. Her daughter, Bertha, came to take her place. George Sherwood and Ruth Den nett were married at Dallas last week and returned here Monday, where they will make their home. They were treated to an old time charivari Monday night. A. J. Ramsay and wife left for eastern Oregon Saturday where they will live temporarily with the hope of improving Mr. Ramsay's health. A. R. Cadle has begun building a new residence in the north part of town on a lot he bought form Mrs. J. J. Burch. George Smith, Jr., received a bad ly injured leg while playing basket ball at Oak Grove last week. McArthur & StauS lost a valuable horse last week.
