Personal and Other Paragraphs General Interest to The Observ er's Numerous Headers. of FALLS CITY Officials of, the Southern Pacific have plans made for enlarging the local depot in the spring. The head carpenter, who was here last week, states that it is planned to build an .office, waiting room and baggage room on the east of the present waiting room and use the entire old part for freight purposes. The enlargement of the depot has been under "consid eration for some time. The Community Christmas commit tee reports that the cost of holding the Christmas exercises and tree here amounted to $65. The amount sub scribed by business men and others interested, to defray the fund, was $62.30. Wednesday morning the hoarse sound of the mill whistle awoke the echoes in the valley and it is safe to say that the spirits of the citi zens rose to above 90, says the Falls City News. The mill shut down about the 8th of July, 1915, and the town has been practically dead and buried ever since then. The starting of the mill, however, will infuse new life into all business and old time pros perity will soon return. It is stated the mill has enough orders ahead to keep it busy through January and February. It has a capacity of 100,- 000 feet per day. L. L. Brooks, formerly of Falls City but late of Washington, has re turned here to live. H. Krabs, who has held a position in Dallas for two years, has moved to his homo in Falls City. Matthew Goodspeed, while repair ing a roof on an engine shed for the milling company, fell through the roof in such a way as to bruise se verely his right leg. Blood poison ing resulted and he has been in a ser ious condition, but is recovering. Mrs. F. K. Hubbard has been quite ill for some time, but is improving. Miss La Verne Mickalson spent the week-end in Corvallis visiting' rela tives. S. Smith, late of Woodburn, lias moved to the Ira Mela-ling farm east of town and will farm the place the coming year. Mr. and Mrs. Phil Arthurs are the parents of a boy baby born Decem ber 28. Harry Krebs has lately purchased three city lots near the city park and intends to build a residence as soon as he can get the material on the ground. Marion Spawn of Lyle, Wash., died on Sunday, December 28th of heart failure. He was a son of F. M. Splawn and a nephew of Mrs. M. E. Miller of. this city, and was born and raised between here and Dallas. He leaves a widow and three children. Mr. and Mrs. Ira DeWitt returned to their home at Pendleton bust week after spending the holidays with his patents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeWitt. They contemplate locating here in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Throckmorton left yesterday, via Portland, for San Francisco. They expect to motor from there to southern California, where thev will spend the winter, S. W. Wingo has moved back to Falls City from Dallas at which lat ter place he has been conducting a restaurant. O. The railroad company has had poles distributed through West Salem to carry a high power transmission cable to be used in electrifying the west side road from Portland southward. The electricity will be furnished from Salem. The Ladies' Aid will meet with Mrs. D. Cade Thursday the 11th. The meeting will take the form of an apron social. Each one attending will bring a small apron with a pocket on it containing half as many cents as tthe maker of the apron is inches around the waist. Surveyors are at work on the road approaching the bridge getting grades West Salem school opened Tuesday for work, having had only six days vacation. Miss Arlene Bennett returned Mon day from a ten-days' visit with her parents in Klamath Falls. Miss Laura McLaren of Highland was a Thursday and Friday guest of the Misses Beth and Ruth Bedford. WEST SALEM Residents who have been suffering from "pink eye" have about all re covered. Mrs. N. E. Tyler of lluena Vista returned to her home last Tuesday after a few days' visit with the It Bedford family. Mrs. Ed. Brock and Mrs. Billings are recovering from quite serious ill ness. A dog poisoner has been getting in his work, four dogs having been found dead and another one or two are miss ing. W. C. Heise was an over New Tear's guest at his home. Mr. Heise is lineman at Myrtle Point. There was a meeting of the city council Tuesday evening. In the ab sence of the mayor J. R. Berford pre sided. Some routine business was transacted. O. M. Douglas was a Wednesday visitor to the county seat. Win. Pinckney and a number of other nearby regents attended the meeting of the co ty court in Dal las last Wednesday. J. Cooper and family for a few days this week. T. J. Fryer is confined to his home this week with the gTip. Dr. Loran Bogan and family will move to Portland this week, where they will reside in the future. Miss Thelma Toney, of McMinn- ville was a week-end visitor here. Miss Emma Hinkle returned to Corvallis on Sunday, after spending a couple of weeks here with hel mother. Mrs. M. WJiitncy departed for Ta- coma, Wash., last week, where she will make her home in the future. H. Hirsehberg made a business trip to Corvallis on Wednesday. Mrs. B. Joluison, who has been ill for some time is reported a little better at this time. E. Fluke took his little son Jack to Salem to the hospital on Wednes day for an operation for appendicitis. Mrs. E. Fluke, who is confined to one of the hospitals in Salem, on ac count of sickness, is reported much better. Mrs. B. Atkins of Kelso, Wash is the guest of relatives here for a week. Mrs. Julia Douty of Winlock, Wash., is visiting here with friends and relatives. A number of young people from here attended a dance given at Falls City on New Year's night. The Independence orchestra gave a dance on Saturday night at the op era house. Mrs. A. D. Davidson, who has been confined to the house with the grippe, is again able to be out. Mrs. Alpha Bascue was granted a divorce from R. J. Baseue by the circuit court last week. Mr. and Mrs. Peterson of Astoria have been the guests of their daugh ter, Mrs. Dean Walker, here during the holidays. The fire department was called to the Perry Dickinson residence Wed nesday morning to put out a fire that had started on the back porch. Mir Perry had placed a bucket of ashes on the porch when he started the fire in the morning and when he returned to dump them he found the porch in flames. Little damage was done by the fire. A new club to be known as the In dependence Athletic club was organ ized last week and the opening smok er was given at the opera house Fri day evening. Three boxing matches were staged and regular events of this kind will be given during the winter months. A. C. Moore now presides over the destinies of the city of Independence as mayor and M. W. Mix has taken his seat as a councilman. They are the only two new faces at the city hall bo far. W. E. Craven, councilman-elect, has yet failed to qualify, and the selection of all appointive officers has been postponed until Jan Hiary 17. A number of farmers in this vicin ity are considering planting sugar beets this year, which from all re ports appears to be a profitable in dustry. There will also be more corn than usual planted this year. The following from Independence have been called to Dallas for the January term of district court: J. O. Anderson, J. S. Bohannon, J. J. Fenton, Frank Fluke, M. W. Mix, W. A. Seaman and Asa B. Taylor. RIFLE CLUB AVERAGES GOOD. Edgar H. A. Webster and H. M, Shoot Perfect Scores. A. F. Toner and H. A. Webster both averaged 93 per cent at the La Creole Rifle club shoot Friday night, Mr. Webster also has two more per fect scores to his credit while H. M, Edgar broke the 10-ring Ave times in succession on one of his scores. Oscar Ellis averaged 44, H. W Stump 42 and F. M. Suver 40 out of a possible 50. The turnout was the smallest of the year due to the in terest in the basketball games, The next shoot will be held Tues day, January 9 at the Riley garage, Do Not Want Card Playing. Proposal to install card tables in poollialls at Falls City has met such pronounced opposition that the city council tabled a petition from the resort proprietors for permission to allow card playing in their places. It developed, however, that there was no ordinance prohibiting card playing in public places, and it is said that the poolhall men will install equipment at once.. Opponents are expected to start a campaign to prohibit this form of recreation in the resorts. Glee Club Here January 16. Twelve members of the Eugene Bi ble university choral club will enter tain local music lovers next Tuesday evening with catchy songs and laugh- producing innovations. The concert will be held in the high school audi torium. Harold Humbert, bass solo ist, is the leading individual light of the club. He has been singing solos for the University of Oregon Glee club for the past two years, Mr. Humbert possesses a deep, rich voice with strong carrying power. County Officials' Bonds Approved. District Attorney Piasecki present" ed the official bonds of the county officers to the county court, Saturday. He reported them in full accordance with the law. 'Augmented by a few older hands, the high school band appeared on the down town streets Friday night in an attempt to arouse interest in the bas ketball games. Leader Ray Boydston chaperoned 15 musicians down in front of the Hotel Gail for the first session and then on down Main street, where they played until time for the game. NOTICE TO CREDITORS.
