The Misses Collins will company Miss Muscott to Dallas, where they will spend their vacation visiting at the home or tneir parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Collins. Abram S. Locke, who until four years ago, , when he moved to Port land, was. a resident and leading citi zen of Independence, died at Portland last week at the age of 58 years and 10 months. Burial was at Indepen dence. Riddell & Sons Bold their wool slip this week. There were 6324 pounds at 29 cents. The amount was 11,543.' 96. Monmouth Herald. Miss Vera Burns, who has been teaching the Intermediate grades of the Buena Vista schools, has been elected to a position In the Portland schools and has accepted. Mr. Linn of Portland, representing the Ellison-White Chautauqua system, was in Dallas on Saturday. In order to encourage a large at tendance at the Portland Rose Fes, tival June 9, 10, and 11, the railroads centering in that city have announced round trip rates of one and one-third fare. This will apply to all territory within approximately 200 miles from Portland. Dallas will put on her glad clothes to welcome Chautauqua visitors, The sawmill at Buell has discontln ued operations, and the men formerly employed there are now seeking work elsewhere. The Buell baseball team, of which Lloyd Ridgeway Is manager, has re- celved new suits and the boys are now open to engagements. The Buell correspondent to the Sheridan Sun -aayB: "T. J. Merrick, road supervisor of District No. 22, has Just completed two large grades of 160 . feet each and a 350 foot fill between the Wolf hill and Jim Savage's place at the very low cost of 1250."' Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Yocom of Ball ston have gone to San Francisco to visit the exposition, going thither by automobile. The Ballston Dramatic company re cently put on a play there, and real ized the handsome sum of $66 there from. Attorney Walter L. Tooze, Jr., de livered an address at a K. of P. picnic at Hubbard last Saturday. Miss Katherlne Van Voorhees ot the Dallas hospital is attending an Adventlst convention in Portland and during her absence, Miss Pearl Den nett la acting in her capacity as su perintendent. A. H. Mr. M. L. Morris of Lebanon, who moved nere with his family this week, will be local manager. An auto party from Dallas attend ed the graduating exercises at Per- rydale Friday evening. An auto-truck load of young Deo- pie from Salem came over to Dallas Friday evening to enjoy skating at the rink. Rev. George W. Taylor of Albnny will preach, both morning and even ing, at the Presbyterian church next Sunday. After furnishing music for the Rainbow theater at McMlnnvllle the past several months. Miss Pauline bnyder has returned home. T. J. Warren and family of Mc Mlnnvllle came up and Sundayed with Mrs. Warren's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. V. R. Snyder and other Dallas rel atives. Miss Georgia Ellis spent part of last week In Portland, returning home Monday evening. Mrs. C. A. Johns of Portland visited Dallas relatives last week, returning home Saturday. Mrs. L. & Flnseth is a guest of Port land friends this week. The Riley opera house now awaits only the laying of the floor to be ready for occupancy by the lessee. Mr. Smith. A temporary front is contem plated by Mr. Riley, who has been unable to make satisfactory arrange ments with the Star theater for a solid front, the lease of the Star not expiring until In the fall. Mr. Smith has not yet announced the date of opening the new 110.000 theater. Negotiations for a game of ball on the home grounds between Perrydale and Dallas for the twentieth of the month are pending with good chances of success. 1 The Grand Ronde and Buell base ball teams met at the former place last Sunday, the Indians defeating their rivals by a score of 8 to 1. There will be the regular semi monthly meeting at Christian Science church tomorrow evening. Mrs. E. H. Miller, who has been a guest of her niece, Mrs. C. R. Can- field, returned to her home In Ever ett, Washington, yesterday. Dr. V. . C. Staats was in Portland last week .where he took the degree of Scottish , Rite Masonry. Mr. and Mrs. Thorlaw Tyler-Smith of Rortland and MrB. Wm. Tyler Smith of Sheridan and Mrs. Henry Savery of Ballston were visitors Thursday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Craven on Mill street. T. W.. Nordby of Portland was a Dallas business visitor Thursday. Mr. Nordby was formerly a Dallas busi ness man and is now engaged In the lumber business In Portland. SOCIETY Maintain Trip A Jolly bunch of siuaenis met at tne nign scnool Mon day morning at 7, to go on their an nual Mountain day trip. Each class had Its own wagon. There were about twenty or twenty-five students In each wagon, while others went in automo biles. In the morning an impromptu track-meet was held, when races, high jumps, etc.. were Indulged In by var ious students. Games were also play ed to pass away the time until time for "eats." At twelve a famished crowd of students assembled around the "eats wagon," awaiting their turn to be served. After lunch the greater number of excursionists went further up the creek on a tour of Inspection. At six o'clock the tired, but happy crowd returned home, after spending the day at Ellendale. Company M of Salem won lh thlrH battalion trophy match on the Flnzer rifle range, across the river from Sa lem, in Polk county Sunday, with a total score of 196 over all range. In competition with Companies K of Corvallls. and L of Dallas, which made 1414 and 1720. respectively. The trophy consists of a silver cup offered by Major Carle Ahrams and must be won three times In succession br any one company or riflemen before It be comes the permanent property of that company. Last year Company L of Dallas won the trophy. The Dallas band will open the con cert season on Saturday next with a program on the court house plaza.
