Ths World of Mankind ths Mint. Rough Diamonds In tho Miry Clay. Wtihtd In Blood Moat Preciout. Cut on tho Wheel of Diaciplino Pol ' ishsd by a Famous Lapidariit Re flecting and Refracting tho Light of Truth Set In a Royal Diadem. Toronto, O n t, Jan. 31. Pastor Russell i s bere. We report one of bis addresses, from tbe text. "They shall b e Mine, saitb tbe Lord of Hosts, in that Day when 1 make up My Jew-els."-MalacbiS:17. Tbe figures o" speech throughout the Scriptures are full of signiHcance, said the Pastor. When tbe Lord likens Bis faithful people to precious stones. It signifies that there is an intrinsic value or beau ty that He appreciates, and It Implies that such characters are rare. In com parison to tile world. Our text points to the close of the Age In which we lire, and not only tells that the Lord will not gather His Jewels sooner, but that tbey are the only ones to be gathered then He comes to make up His jewels. We have here a contradiction of tbe ordi nary thought on this subject: (1) That He has been gathering His Jewels for tbe past six thousand years; and (2) That everybody who is respectable is to be gathered to tbe Lord and share In His Kingdom. Evidently this thought Is erroneous. Jewels require to be searched after, and generally need to be washed from tbe mire before being prepared to re fract the light. So some of the Lord's jewels are found In the ordinary walks of life, and some came from deep down in the mire of sin. By one class of His servants He lifts them out of the horrible pit and tbe miry clay, washes them, cleanses them from sin through the merit of His own precious blood and through His Word. Then, through other servants and providences He polishes them with Divine skill. In order that they may reflect and re fract the light or the glory of the Di vine character. Isa lab 02:3. Tho Work of the Great Lapidarlst. , Tbe Pastor went on to explain that as the diamond In Its rough state un cut unpolished has no more value than a common stone, so those whom the Lord Is selecting and preparing as His jewels are to derive their ultimate value from the cutting, shaping, pol ishing, of their characters under Di vine providence. Tbe hardness of the diamond, would represent character; and we are to remember that charac ter belongs to the individual, and that only In proportion as each baa It can be hope to be accepted dually as a Jewel; for those without churacter will not endure tbe tests. The crystallization of tbe diamond corresponds to willingness toward righteousness In the individual; and unless there be such willingness there is none of the Jewel quality which tbe Lord Is now seeking. Those, there fore, who are In the hands of the great Lapidarlst and undergoing His polish ing process, must Hrst have passed through tbe previous experience of having been found of Divine Urnce found of our Lord Jesus must have been washed, aud must have been ac cepted as having wills desirous of har mony with the Divine mind. These may therefore tnke pleasure In ah the trying experiences and difficulties through which our Lord causes them to pass as parts at the polishing process necessary to their completion as Jeho vah's Jewels, to be made up by the close of tbe Gospel Age. Then tbey will be set In the gold of the Divine nature, to reflect the beauties of the Divine character forever. The Value of Trials and Testings. Tbe speaker next proceeded to show that this work of cutting and polish ing Is entrusted only to tbe skilled hands of our Lord Jesus Christ because He Himself has passed through similar experiences at the Father's bands, and therefore knows thus what Is needed to perfect the Jewels, that tbey may be pleasing and acceptable to tbe Father. A part of their lesson is to have faith in the great Master-Workman whom the Father baa appointed to shape and polish them. Soma may require much more trim ming on some aides of their character than do others; and often the disposi tion la to draw back, to be not fully submissive, to fear that the Lord has abandoned them to trial. But Infinite Wisdom assures ns that this la not so. and that to draw back would leave one unfit for to Kingdom. With tha Lord's Jewels, the world baa seen the wheel of discipline which baa been catting this class for centu ries, bat It baa not understood the mat ter. It may have even caught a glimpse of the Jewels, although not ao as to be able to know tha real mer it of their characters or the value of the catting and polishing process. But tbe (treat Lapidarlst knows and has explained It to tbe Jewels; and thus be ing assured that all things are work ing together for their good, ttejr can rejoice even In tribulation.
