Dallas Win In Ragged Game
Shipp Team Uses Two Slabsters

"Boneheads" Are

when the Watt Shipp team of Salem
was defeated by a patched up Dallas
combination to the tune of 10 to 4.
The feature of the matinee was-the
bobbles and the boneheads which, ut
times were so numerous, especially
the lat'ter, that one wasn't sure
whether he was witnessing a hall
game or a ping pong contest. There
were several new faces in the Dallas
iine-np gathered iroin oilier points.
Druhot a former Northwest leaguer
officiated on the mound in the ab
sence of Barhara and Bishop at sec
ond and Bogart at third were re
cruits imported, from Mc.Miunville for
the occasion. And the way this re
juvenated and revamped combination
alighted on Col. Myers' benders and
sent him to the bench in the fifth
boded no good for any slabsrer. Mc-
Kenna who replaced the former Dal
lasite didn 't fare much better, al
though his slow southpaw delivery
fooled the batsmen for a time( and
they only annexed five safeties.
Shipp 's Outclassed.
While the Waft Shipp team, on its
former appearance here put up one
of the best exhibitions seen on the lo
cal diamond this season, they gave a
mighty-yellow exhibition Sunday and
are charged with a total of eight er
rors. The error column does not,
however, take into consideration the)
large number of "boneheads" and
misjiulgmeiits pulled off by the Sa
lem bunch. Meyers started in like a
whirlwind and had the Dallas hitters
eating out of his hand until the third
when they touched him up for a to
tal of four bingles and three runs, ty
ing the score. In their half of the
fourth the visitors again took the
lead with one tally, but in the last
half of this fatal stanza, the locals
solved Col. Myers,' delivery and the
first four men up found him for a
single each, before he was chased to
the bench and young Mister McKen
na substituted. The fearful carnage
of this inning disheartened the Salem
contingent and fiom that time on it
was merely a walk around, the locals
adding one more in the seventh and
six in the eighth. It was a long,
tiresome game, and the hot boards
got mighty tired of the sitters before
the last man was down in the first
of the ninth. Let us hoje that this
sort of thing is over for the season
it will have to le if the management
expects to keep the attendance.
People will not pay good money to
see such off-color exhibitions of the
national game. '

A Correction.
In reference to the publication of
the news story in Friday's issue of
The Observer concerning the action
of the city council in regard to the
paving matter. 15. Lovelace owner of
property on Mill and Jefferson streets
takes exception to the statement that
he "did not feel financially able at
this time to pay for the paving."

Deer Season.
The open season for bucks begins
next Friday, Aug. 1, and will close
Ocl. HI. The limit is three, and the
new game licenses have three cou
pons, one of which must be fastened
to the carcass of each animal killed.
The best time to thin either peaches
or apples la when they range about the
size of a hickory nut It will be impos
sible to get all of the thinning done
when the fruit is Just this size, but the
nearer one can come to doing It the bet
ter. Peaches should be thinned to five
or six inches apart on the tree, depend
ing somewhat upon size, while apples
should be thinned to six or seven inches
apart.
The following recipe for making fly
repellant for cattle has been tested out
by a number of dairymen and seems
to give good results: Three quarts of
fish oil, one quart of petroleum and
one ounce of carbolic acid. This should
be applied at intervals with a hand
power sprayer. When the hair be
comes coated with the composition
the spraying will not htve to be made
so frequently.
