At present one depot is about 200 yards north of the west end of the Center street bridge. The other is at Kingwood park, about a mile southwest. It is said that" five-sixths of the traveling: public of West Salem is within a aradius of a block from Sec olid and Johnson streets, the propos ed location oi the new depot. While t he station is being constructed, the people ask that the railroad be in structed to have their trains - stop at the designated location. The commission has taken the mat ter up with the railroad. Those who signed the petition are: II. C. He fi ner, W. C. Heise, J. R. Walker, Myr tle Walker, Arthur Rex, W. S. Fitts, J. Wood, A. B. It seems the editor of the Dallas Observer finds fault with your cor respondent, as he describes the beau ties and charms that surround New port. He don't like the words "sad" and "slush." Now if this editor would come to Newport and spend a few days at the beach and go just as the sun was setting, apparently in the sea, and sit down upon Cupid's Rock and look off on the blue sea and over t he dark waves on the bar; to hear the song of the seagull as she wing's her way to her roosting place on the rocks at Cape Foul weather; to hear the chirp, chirp of the sea birds as they pass by; the roar of the sea lion in the distance; the scream of the night hawk; to see the mermaids comb their hair, and to hear the low wash of the waves as they beat upon the shore, he, too, no doubt would feel sad and lonely as your correspondent did. BELL RINGING POPU1AR. J. 4 Male Quartette. Some years ago the Burgess family of bell ringers was considered one of the greatest novelty attractions on the concert stage. This was the day of vaudeville as we understand it now but were they alive today their act would undoubtedly be a vaude ville top liner. This bell ringing has since their introduction been a very popular musical "stunt." 'We have to have a very capable company in this line on our Chautauqua. The Chicago Male Quartea in addition to regular vocal and instrumental work will give us some splendid work with the bells. This quartet appears in the afternoon and evening of the fi nal day of the Chautauqua and will undoubtedly leave an impression long to be remembered. The quartet is popularly favored in its reader as Mr. Parmenter is very pleasant in deed. It would be hard indeed to find a stronger program for the last day than the one furnished by the combined effort of the Chicago Male Quartet ami Ben Chapin as Abraham Lincoln. Daniel Poling, of Cleveland, O., will arrive today on his way to Los Angeles, Cal., to attend a tem perance gathering. Mr. Poling is a well-known Oregon man and son of Rev. C. C. Poling, of this city. He is now National superintendent of the temperance department f lie Christian Endeavor society. He will speak next Wednesday at the World's Christian Citizenship Conference. In the warehouse of a local imple ment firm an Observer representative noticed a bran new old-fashioned Deering reaper on display and upon inquiry learned that the firm had sold several of these machines during the present season. They have been bought by farmers for use in cutting clover seed as it is claimed that more of the seed is saved by gathering it in bundles rather than by harvesting it in the usual manner, with a mower.
