A ship leaving New York for Buenos Ayrea recently had a large shipment on board. This fruit will travel 10, 000 miles from the orchard before ft reaches the consumer. A carload of Grande Ronde Valley apples has been sent to Norway lately. Besides, there Is the usual strong demand from many other parts of Europe and the Orient is also taking Oregon fruit. SUMMONS. An im portant conference at which the whole Pacific Coast should be represented, will be that of the National Confer ence of Charities and Corrections, to be held in Seattle next July. This gathering will take up the subject of dealing with the immigration to come to this coast upon the completion of the Panama canal. , A heavy flood of European immi grants will bring a long list of evils in their train unless some intelligent work Is done in directing the move ment, It is said. The aim of the con ference will be to do away with the slums that the Atlantic Coast cities have built up and to direct the new comers to the farms and vacant lands instead of having them congest in the population centers. Forest reserves In Oregon will con tribute a total of $42,259 to the state in 1912. Most of this money goes to state road work and it is derived from the sale of timber within the forest reserves, a certain percentage of which goes to the state in which the reserves are located. Oregon cheese took honors at the recent National Dairy Show at Chica go winning second honors in a compe tition with 800 samples of the cheese maker's art from all parts of the country. The possibilities of broomcorn grow ing in Eastern Oregon have . been made known the past week, whe" samples were submitted to a Portland broom manufacturer. Itjis said that 1000 pounds of the corn can be grown on an acre, and as several hundred carloads of the material are brought into the state each year, there seem' to be a chance for farmers to mak money growing it here at home.
