TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 1912 TWO POLK COUNTY OBSERVER Polk County Observer Published Semi-Weekly at Dallas, Oregon, by the OBSERVER PRINTING COMPANY Office Phones. Business office Main 19 Press room Main 19-2 EUGENE FOSTER. W. II. TOTTEN. Subscription Rates: One Year $1.'50 Six Months 75 Three Months 40 Strictly in advance. Entered as second-class matter March 1, 1907, at the post office at Dallas, Oregon, under the Act of Con gress of March 3, 1879. with Its Rambling dens and open sa loons at all hours, was exactly as the majority of public sentiment wanted it.. The town with no-ileene laws governing It, and with blind pigs In operation, and open and flagrant vio lation of the law of frequent occur rence, could eauily stamp out this sort of thing If the people who opposed It were In the majority. Under these conditions, then, If the plague spots are to be eliminated, it Is an outside influence that will have to do It, and Gov. West appears to be the man of the hour. 9 The way to build up Dallas ts to pat ronize Dallas people. Ben Selling, Republican candidate for United States senator, Is out In an address to the voters of Oregon in which he defines his position In the presidential contest, and declares that he will support President Taft. The dominant feature In the Selling state ment is its evident sincerity. Mr. Helling declarfs himself as one of the firMt progressives in Oregon and says that he is still fighting for, and be lieves in, those principles. He shows pwpp; I apnt oney k n - cgcgtt by calling attention to his record In the state legislature, and In the politi cal campaigns In Multnomah county, Hint he has done much to give Oregon its advanced form of govern ment. He declares that President Taft Is a progressive and, as such, Is entitled to the support of every hon- I est believer In progressive Ideas. Mr. I Selling's statement is clear, concise and frank, and will result in securing i for him the support of the Oregon Republicans. CAN IT Kl'CCF.KD? The main concern of the liullmoos ers now Is to implant In the rninds of the people that their "party" Is not a "one-man movement. " They are hav ing all manner of trouble in this re spect. Klghty per cent of the men who have enlisted under the banner of the third-termer have lift!.' idea of the platform of his party. They prob ablby wouldn't recognize it, from the regular national Republican platform If the two were posted side by side without other distinguishing mark And they don't care about platforms, anyway. It's Just Roosevelt with them. They ire perfectly willing to vote to overthrow established tradi tions, to Inaugurate new and untried theories, and even to threaten the Hta billly of government, by granting per mission and power to Roosevelt to as sume the duties of p; f .lilent, simply beer. use It is Roosevelt who asks the saerllice. Tan n movement founded upon so insecure a footing, whose paternity Is the personal ambition of an unsafe anu Innsane demagogue for perpetua tion in power, be successful in this country? Are the American people ready to desert tlnu-trled and tested Institutions and methods which have given unexampled prosperity and sta bility to this nation and made it the greatest on earth, merely at the be hest of one Individual whose over powering and dominant egotism is his1 one overshadowing characteristic ? We do not believe it. The new movement will attract the calamllyltes, disappointed office seek ers and others who don't know and can't explain why they are there, but It will not have the support of the great body of calm, thoughtful peo ple. These will think twice before they espouse the personal cause of Roosevelt and will remain steadfast to the faith and belief that the prosper ity and progress of the entire coun try is paramount to the personal am bitions of any man. Now that the dates for the fall Har vest Festival and School Knlr have been decided upon, it is up to every citizen of Dallas to do what is possi ble to make the affair a success. Es pecially should there be a compre hensive display of farm products and fruit. Polk county has no superiors among the counties of the state In this regard, and steps should be tak en at once to see that the best is on display. That the school portion of the exhibit will be In every way wor thy of the "blue ribbon school coun ty of Oregon" is already assured let us see to it that the display of pro ducts of the soil may be something to be proud of. Efforts of the Democratic spell binders and newspapers to annex the LitFollette support for Candidate Wil son are ludicrous In the extreme. With much satisfied effrontery It is claimed that every last one of the Wisconsin senator's friends will vote for Wilson In an endeavor to "further IjtKolli'tte's progressive ideas." Just how they figure that a vote for a Democratic candidate will help the Wisconsin man, is not evident. Sen ator LaFollettc has declared that the only way to secure the triumph of his progressive ideas is to work within the party rather than to flock to thie standard of Roosevelt. If this be true how, then, can it be Accomplished by deserting the Republican party and voting for Wilson? LEAVE Your Orders With Craven Bros. England anil Canada are peeved at the uctlon of the senate in standing by American shipping and legislating that coastwise ships should pass free of tolls through the canal. They are so worked up about It that they may withhold tin ir support from the com ing Panama exposition at San Fran cisco, according to reports. Well, let them do so. It is not likely that the threat will be taken seriously, either In this country or in Canada or Eng land. The Itrltlsh nation is well aware of the advantages of exhibi tions of this nature, and if it elects not to be represented, that Is Its af fair. If It can afford to Ignore the great world's lair, upon so llimsy and selllsh a pretext, its action will rrllret upon the common sense of English and Canadian people more than upon the United States. The passage through tin- canal of American coast wise vessels free from toll charges Is of astly more Importance to the United Stales than the iuestion of uhethcr or not English and Canadain j exhibits shall be seen at San Era nets- I eo. The great majority of the Amer- i .Muni lean people probably don't can1 a hoot gon. whether these countries patronl.e the' fair, but they do demand that Amer-i lean shipping be given this adantage over vessels of other power. The are entitled to it, and the American people have earned this eoncessinu in return for the money the canal will have cost. The rumpus In the Oregon National Ouard has become a disgrace to the soldiery of the state and should be speedily forgotten. The actions of the general staff and of the adjutant gen eral and their childish antics over the disbandment of the Second battalion Is becoming distasteful to the people generally, who know little and care less about the matter. Politics domi nate the National (Juard, It is declar ed, and the general staff has done its part to hear out this assertion. What is needed in Oregon, it appears, Is n disbandment of the general staff. A Newport newspaper complains Unit the Carson Wild West show, which recently vistied Toledo, didn't advertise ill Newport and thus ap prise the people of its coming, in or der that they might attend. The New port people shouldn't lose any sleep over the show's neglect, especially since the principal stunt in connec tion with the show appears to be the adeptness of some of its attaches in short change tactics und of its hangers-on In fllmllammlng the public.
