The first debates of the county high, school debating league for the south section were held at various points last Friday night. The ques tion was "Resolved, that the initia tive and referendum should be more generally adopted in the United States." The results of the contests were as follows: Dallas versus Falls City, at Dallas High school auditorium, won by Falls City by unanimous vote; judges Hon. Ira C. Powell, Monmouth; M. Luther, W, A. Weist, Salem. Monmouth versus Dallas, at Mon mouth, won by Monmouth unani mously; Judges, City Superintendent W. R. Rutherford, Principal J. A. Bucannon, McMinnvllle; J. W. Craw ford, Salem. Independence versus Monmouth, at Independence, won by Independence 2 to.l; judges, Professor D. M. Metz ger, Dallas; Mr. Welsch and Mr. Biddle, Salem. Falls City versus Independence at Falls City, won by Independence 2 to 1; judges. Professor Gilmore, Dallas; Mr. Peterson, Corvallis; H. H. CONFESSED HORSE STEALING CuljHit Captured on Salmon River is Returned. . A man giving his name as Brown is In the county Jail awaiting the action of the grand jury on a charge of horse stealing. He was captured last Friday on Salmon rivier by Dep uty Sheriff Harris and was brought back. He pleaded guilty before Jus tice of the Peace Holman and was ordered to Jail. On the night of the seventh he took a flnie mare from A. J. Jones, who resides on the Frances Kevt Dlace near Perrydale. Brown, according to his statement, is a re cent arrival from the Dakotas. Leeture Well Attended. A large number of interested lis teners heard the lecture given on ap ple growing at the Grand theater last Saturday afternoon by A.. I. Mason, one of Hood River's prominent grow ers. The talk was Illustrated with stereopticon views and was practical and valuable and added further proof to the statement that as good apples can be grown here as in Hood Riv er. At the conclusion of the lecture, Mr. Mason spoke on needed road legislation. f.
