Gates, the well-known Hills lioro capitalist and a close observer of financial conditions, expresses the op inion that whatever business depres sion may exist throughout the coun try is temporary In its nature. After having visited for several weeks in the financial centers of the East, he re turns to Oregon firm in the belief that business la in a healthy condition and that any fear of a possible panic is groundless. : ' In an interview published In the Hillsboro Independent, Mr. Gates says that during his trip he repeatedly heard the prediction that after the presidential election is over, business will resume Its activity and the coun try will experience an era of unparal leled prosperity.. He says that while it has been asserted that the banks have been curtailing their loans be cause of a vague anticipation of trou ble, the banks are not responsible for the condition. The reason the banks are full of unloaned money is because there is little demand for money. This is because there Is a cessation of new undertakings and stocks are be ing allowed to run down. He admits this condition will hasten the return of business activity, for even a normal demand for staples will soon exhaust stocks on hand and compel their re plenishment. Mr. Gates' observation was confined to Eastern states and he would ven ture no opinion as to Pacific Coast affairs, saying he had been too long absent, lie said, however, that un questionably the lull In business is more apparent in the manufacturing states of the East thai it would be in the Coast states, where manufacture .Is an Incident and is overshadowed by the agricultural and export Interests. An Item In the news columns con veys the information that the home demand for lumber this year exceeds that of any previous year and that the Increased local trade haB In a large measure compensated for the falling oft" In long-distance shipments. In this connection it might be added that the Dallas and Falls City sawmills have been doing some well-planned and carefully-executed advertising this year the first time In the history of Polk County that the columns of the local newspapers have been sought in an effort to Increase the home sales of lumber. There is no getting away from the fuct that printer's Ink Is the best medicine for an ailing business. DALLAS VISITS FALLS CITY I'KAINE FROM DIAZ. One of the first things that ex-President Diaz said on bunding in Eng land was that the United States Gov ernment's action fh connection with the recent revolution In Mexico was dignified, generous and correct. Dial was on hand during the whole- Insur rection. He saw what was going on on our side of the Rio Grande as well as on his own. Queer stories occasion ally come from the City of Mexico during the rebellion regarding what he thought and said about the atti tude and acts of the United States, but his own words in England show, us that very much that was attributed to him while at home was untrue. The ex-president furnUhes a fine tribute to the Intelligence and unself ish ness of the United States Govern ment in this whole Mexican trouble. Kor sending the troops to the Rio Gruinde the administration was as sailed by many newspapers and poli ticians. It was accused of an attempt to get up a war with Dia. which would give us a pretext for Interven tion, and thus create an Issue which would sweep the country for the Ite piihllcun party In 1912. We were told by thowe papers that the administra tion which was In power during a fort-inn war was nlways successful in the elections Immediately after "the war, as well as In those held while the whi; was In progress, an assertion which was untrue In both particulars, f onwnuc ntly, according to these critics, the administration sm at tempting to get up trouble with Mex ico, so as to divert the thoughts of (he American people from home sub jects and give the Republicans an easy victory. for president next 'tr. Hut General Dlax shows the ab surdity of all this antl-oumliilstratlon talk.. The movement of troops to Tcxiis was dictated by public spirit and a desire to promote the cause of lcuct'. Neutrality by the United Slates In the Mexican fight was ob served better because of the presence of our troops mar the war cone than it had l-n previously. The world as notified that if chaos should come in Mexico as a result of the rebellion the I'niled Stales would step In and protect the property and lives of Americana and other forr timer. Thus neither Encland nor any other coun try bad any incentive to send war xeHfte-t to Ameru-an waters. Our prejte-nce on the I. order of the war re gion, moreover, brought M see le Itiin the own pa la n Is quicker than 11 otlurwls would hv come. St. I.-ouia Globe-D mocrat. Attends Independence Day Celeliru- tion There and Enjoys the Day. Practically all of Dallas was In Falls City today, enjoying the pro gram of Independence Day festivities which had been prepared for enter tainment Reports from there give the attendance as very large. The day was perfect as to weather and was enlivened with speeches, music, games and sports of various kinds'. .. Monday's celebration was in com memoration of the completion of the waterworks system of Falls City, and was observed In a manner aproprlate to the occasion.. The Dallas Greys, in a ball game with the Kalis City team, defeated them by 7 to 2. Until noon today the Fourth In Dallas was a very sane one. Now and then a lonely cracker broke the stillness, but that was all. In the af ternoon, as the Observer went to press, a ball game was being arranged to take place on the College campus, between the mtllmen and the yardmen of the Dallas Lumber & Logging Com pany, as a sort of consolation feature for the few stay-at-homes. Director U. S. Grant was also marshaling the remnants of his band to appear on the court house plaza for an Impromptu concert. Just to prove that, although deserted, Dallas was not dejected...
